  • The Puerto Rico Open from Río Grande, Puerto Rico tees off Thursday, March 2nd
  • Nate Lashley is the +1600 favorite over Ben Martin

With the worlds best teeing off at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the PGA Tour has an opposite-field event at the Puerto Rico Open, where youngsters and wily veterans have a chance to claim a tour title. Nate Lashley, who has one PGA Tour win to his credit, is the betting favorite over Ben Martin, who was T-5th at the Honda Classic.

This tournament has been something of a breeding round for maiden victories, with nine of 14 all-time winners making this their breakthrough win on the PGA Tour. The course is Grand Reserve Country Club in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, and it plays to a par-72. Going low is imperative for success, with all but one champion shooting double digit under par en route to earning the trophy.

Ben Martin in Solid Form

Coming into this tournament, Ben Martin has displayed some strong golf which could lead to him getting back into the winners circle. He was T-13th at Pebble Beach, then at the Honda Classic Martin was even stronger, tying for fifth. For those two tournaments, he gained 18.5 strokes over his competitors. Unsurprisingly, he’s put up some really impressive ‘strokes gained’ stats of late.

Martin has had some success on this track in the past, having picked up a third place showing. With his fine form, he finds himself as the second favorite to hoist the trophy on Sunday. Unlike other events, where the second choice would have pretty short odds, he still finds his at +2000, which is very digestible. That particularly holds true with how he’s been playing, plus the competition he’s up against, in a weaker field.

2023 Puerto Rico Open Picks and Value Bets

  1. Cameron Percy (+3000): In the last 24 rounds on tour, nobody has gained more total strokes tee-to-green than Cameron Percy, of those competing. He was T-12th at the Honda, where he gained 5.5 strokes on the dance floor compared to the field. In each of his last two years teeing it up at the Puerto Rico Open, Percy wound up in a tie for seventh.
  2. Dylan Wu (+3500): In the last twelve rounds, Dylan Wu is second in total strokes gained. He enters the event in solid form, chasing a top-30 at Pebble Beach with a T-10th at the Honda Classic, where he picked up over five strokes on the greens.
  3. Jim Herman (+6500): Three-time tour winner Jim Herman has one opposite field event title to his credit (2019 Barbasol Championship). He comes in off a very solid T-14th at the Honda Classic, where he gained over six strokes on the field tee-to-green. His previous start at the WM Phoenix Open, he was in the mix following his first two rounds before a tough weekend. Herman finished T-7th here a year ago.
