Thanks to its elevated status, the Waste Management Phoenix Open now feels more like a Major than a
regular February Tour stop.

Throw in the fact that this event leads directly into the Super Bowl, and we now have appointment viewing from Thursday to Sunday on our hands.

23 of the top-24 eligible players per the World Rankings will tee it up this week, which means two things: A star studded leaderboard, and likely plenty of prominent names not qualifying for the weekend.

Like every week he’s in the field, Jon Rahm has by far the shortest odds to make the cut. He’s followed by world number one Rory McIlroy, before the price tags drastically change. We’ll get to our favorite picks to play all four rounds in a minute, but first let’s discuss our prime contender to miss the cut.

Spieth Is Struggling Right Now

That would be Jordan Spieth, whose game has fallen off a cliff after an opening round 64 at the Sony Open. Spieth proceeded to follow up the low opening round at that event with a 75 the next day to miss the cut.

He took the next two weeks off, before a lacklustre finish last week at Pebble Beach. Playing in a venue where he’s had a tremendous amount of success, he finished T63 out of 75 golfers who made the weekend. He was +3 over the final two rounds, losing a combined 5 total strokes on the field.

Jordan Spieth Recent History at WMPO

Year Result SG Total
2022 60th -3.1
2021 4th +10.2
2020 MC -1.9
2018 MC -1.1

His ball striking has been a mess in 2023, but even more concerning is the fact that his short game (which is his bread and butter) has abandoned him. Spieth has lost 5.7 strokes ball striking over his last three measured rounds and another 5 strokes on and around the green.

Also working against him is his recent course history at the Waste Management Phoenix Open. Spieth
has trunk slammed twice in his last four appearances, and barely snuck through the cut line in 2022, before fading hard on the weekend en route to a 60th place finish.

Pick: Jordan Spieth to Miss the Cut (+200)

Make the Cut Parlay

We’re bearish on Spieth’s chances of playing all four rounds this week, but there’s plenty of golfers we expect to make the weekend. Justin Thomas headlines the list. The two-time Major winner has five straight top-17 finishes in Phoenix, and is arguably the game’s best iron player when he’s on.

Thomas makes a great starting leg for our make the cut parlay, and Cameron Young is an excellent second selection. He’s a fantastic striking star and hasn’t missed a cut since early July 2022.

Next up, Sahith Theegala, who played in the final group of this tournament a year ago. Theegala is fresh off a fourth place finish at Torrey Pines, and has four top-five results in his past nine starts.

The last time we saw Alex Noren, he finished fourth in Houston, and he started off 2023 in Europe with a fifth place result. Noren finished sixth in Phoenix last year, and has made the weekend in three straight Waste Management Open appearances.

Our fifth leg will be Keith Mitchell, who’s fresh off a fourth place result last week at Pebble Beach. Mitchell was T10 at this tournament in 2022, and ranks second in the field in strokes gained off the tee and 12th in ball striking over the last 24 rounds.

Last, but not least, our anchor leg will be K.H. Lee. The ultimate TPC superstar, Lee plays his best golf at these types of courses. Both of his wins were on TPC tracks, while he finished second in Phoenix in 2021.

Add it all up and we’re looking at a +328 payout if all six of our golfers get through the cutline.

Pick: Make the Cut Parlay (+328)
