MLB Player Prop #1: Spencer Strider Over 9.5 Strikeouts

Whatever the opposite of the phrase “what happens when the irresistible force meets the immovable object?” is, that is essentially Spencer Strider vs. the Twins.

By legitimately any statistical measure you look at, Strider is the best strikeout pitcher in the MLB, and also, by any team statistical measure you can find, the Twins strike out the most of any team in the MLB. Let’s start with Strider.

As mentioned above, Strider has a strikeout rate of 39%, tops in the MLB. The pitcher with the second-highest rate would be Shohei Ohtani, at 32.6%. That 6.4% difference, by the way, is the same difference between Ohtani and Max Scherzer, who has the 27th-highest strikeout rate. Pretty good!

He has a K/9 of 14.46, which, you guessed it, is no.1 in the MLB. His K/inning rate is 1.62 (100th percentile), and his swinging strike rate is 19.8% (100th percentile). So, as I said, the best strikeout pitcher in the MLB.

I’ve written about the Twins a couple times now, but they strike out the most in the MLB. Their team strikeout rate against right-handed pitchers is 27.2%, which is the highest in the MLB. If you look at the last 14-days, that number jumps up to 27.9%. Strider hasn’t hit double-digit strikeouts since 5/23, which was six starts ago, but we like for that to change on Monday.

Pick: Spencer Strider Over 9.5 Strikeouts (-110)

MLB Player Prop #2: Anthony Santander to Record 2+ Bases

It had been a while since we had a total bases prop, which we naturally had to rectify. So Santander is a switch hitter, which is always fun, but he performs significantly better at the plate against left-handed pitchers. The Orioles will be facing off against the Reds, who have lefty Brandon Williamson on the mound.

Against LHP, Santander bats .286, and by FanGraphs standards has an excellent rating for both wOBA (weighted on-base average) and WRC+. His wOBA is .405, and his WRC+ of 163. This is up from an average of .267, a wOBA of .337, and a WRC+ of 116 against righties.

Santander is also hot at the plate, which we love. He’s recorded 2+ bases in seven of his last ten games, including a whopping seven total bases in Sunday’s game, when he went yard in the video above.

Looking at Brandon Williamson shows a very hittable pitcher as well. ERA isn’t everything, but it definitely isn’t nothing, either, and Williamson has an ERA of 5.40 in seven starts so far this year.

In four starts in June, he has given up a total of six home runs, and 26 hits in only 22.1 innings pitched. Normally we try to get these bases props to be +money, but the value was good on this one at -115 that we just had to bite.

Pick: Anthony Santander to Record 2+ Bases (-115)
