  • Often criticized for his unexciting style, Tyron Woodley just laid a beatdown for the ages on Darren Till.
  • Coming off his fourth straight welterweight title defense, what’s next for the undisputed 170-pound king?
  • Could we see a mega-fight between Woodley and the greatest welterweight of all time, Georges St-Pierre?

Robbie Lawler? Vanquished. Stephen Thompson? Conquered. Demian Maia? Subdued.

Darren Till? Completely and utterly annihilated!

Tyron Woodley added Till to his ever-growing kill-list at UFC 228 in one of the most lopsided title fights the UFC has ever seen. Till managed to last almost two full rounds, but landed just one strike in over nine minutes. Woodley, who landed 74 of his own, barely gave Till room to breathe. The Briton only managed to attempt seven strikes.

That’s less than one per minute.

The champ dropped the challenger early in the second round, ground-and-pounded him into a fine powder for four minutes, and then finished him with d’arce choke. It was an electrifying performance from a man that UFC president Dana White has roundly criticized as unlikeable and boring.

And even though Woodley upped the entertainment value at UFC 228, White continued to harpoon his welterweight champion after the event.

But like him or not, White is stuck with Woodley as his welterweight champion, and now that T-Wood has put another body in the ground, the UFC has a few interesting options for his next opponent.

Odds on Tyron Woodley’s Next Opponent Odds
Colby Covington -300 (1/3)
Rory MacDonald +2200 (23/1)
Georges St-Pierre +2400 (24/1)
FIELD +500 (5/1)

Covington won the interim welterweight title by beating Rafael Dos Anjos at UFC 225 while Woodley was on the shelf with a shoulder injury. He called out Woodley after UFC 228 and, as the top-ranked challenger, has the inside track on the next title shot.

A sure sign that Covington is the most-likely choice, sportsbooks have already posted odds for a Woodley vs Covington matchup in their MMA futures section (with Woodley at -185 and Covington at +150).

It’s worth noting, however, that the Till fight was the last bout on Woodley’s current eight-fight contract with the UFC. It’s unlikely that he leaves the promotion altogether, but given the way White keeps criticizing him, it’s not out of the realm of possibility. If Woodley does eschew the UFC, then a rematch with Rory MacDonald (the Bellator welterweight champ who beat Woodley at UFC 174) is the clear choice.

The fight that fans (and probably White) want to see is a matchup with welterweight legend Georges St-Pierre. Woodley might not think that he needs a win over the GOAT in order to go down in history as the best welterweight ever …

… but neutral observers sure do. Unless Woodley is deaf to online chatter, he’ll be keenly aware that few put him on the same level as GSP at this point, even after the Till fight.

Tyron Woodley vs GSP Props Odds
Odds Tyron Woodley ever fights GSP +1200 (12/1)
Odds Tyron Woodley would beat GSP (in a 2018 fight) -200 (1/2)

The fact that fight fans want to see it and Woodley probably wants it deep down inside won’t make it come to fruition, though. GSP is downplaying the possibility of another UFC comeback, and if he does return, the biggest fight the UFC could make is a matchup with Conor McGregor. GSP vs McGregor would pretty much amount to a license to print money for the UFC.

Who do you want to see Tyron Woodley fight next? Would a 37-year-old GSP, coming out of semi-retirement for the second time, stand any chance against Woodley, who still seems to be in his prime at age 36? Let us know in the comments or on Facebook or Twitter.
