Will Figueiredo Defend His Belt For The 1st Time?

Deiveson Figueiredo is coming off back-to-back dominating performances over Joseph Benavidez to win the vacant flyweight title. Alex Perez, meanwhile, was not supposed to be fighting the Brazilian but stepped in over a month ago after Cody Garbrandt had to pull out due to an injury.

Figueiredo & Perez Recent Fights

Figueiredo
VS
Perez
Joseph Benavidez, win by submission (title fight) Fight 1 Jussier Formiga, win by TKO
Joseph Benavidez, win by KO Fight 2 Jordan Espinosa, win by submission
Tim Elliott, win by submission Fight 3 Mark De La Rosa, win by decision
Alexandre Pantoja, win by decision Fight 4 Joseph Benavidez, loss by TKO

Figueiredo has proven he is a hard hitter at 125-pounds, but last time out against Benavidez, he silenced the critics about his grappling skills. Many pointed to his loss to Jussier Formiga where he was outwrestled, but since then has been able to stuff the takedowns and submitted solid jiu-jitsu fighters in Tim Elliott and Benavidez.

For Perez to win this fight he will need it to hit the championship rounds. A big question mark surrounding Figueiredo is his gas tank, while Perez’s leg kicks and cardio are a big part of his game.

However, Deiveson Figueiredo is just a different animal at flyweight that I’m not sure anyone will beat for awhile. I expect Perez to come out and look to trade with the Brazilain, as Perez isn’t known as a wrestler. Figueiredo will eventually get clipped with something big, and the champ will finish it off by TKO.

I think Figueiredo will get him out in the second or third. I have also locked Figueiredo in a parlay with Louis Cosce on the prelims that comes out to -153 odds, which is a bet I like quite a bit.

Pick: Deiveson Figueiredo (-305)

Does Maia Have Any Chance?

This should be a very quick and easy fight to breakdown, as Valentina Shevchenko is one of the best fighter’s ever, and Jennifer Maia is 3-2 in her last five.

Shevchenko & Maia Recent Fights

Shevchenko
VS
Maia
Katlyn Chookagian, win by TKO (title fight) Fight 1 Joanne Calderwood, win by submission
Liz Carmouche, win by decision (title fight) Fight 2 Katlyn Chookagian, loss by decision
Jessica Eye, win by KO (title fight) Fight 3 Roxanne Modafferi, win by decision
Joanna Jedrzejczyk, win by decision (title fight) Fight 4 Alexis Davis, win by decision

Valentina Shevchenko will win this fight, but at -1667 there is absolutely no way you can bet that straight up, and it doesn’t add much value by adding it to a parlay. So, instead, you will have to look for the method of victory, and I like Shevchenko inside the distance, which is -190 on some books, and Shevchenko by KO/TKO/DQ, which is -130.

Both of those bets present much more value as I like Shevchenko to win the fight in the second or third round.

Pick: Valentina Shevchenko (-1667)

Other UFC 255 Picks:

  1. Tim Means (+120): This will be a very entertaining striking match, but I think Means is the more technical striker where he can outpoint Perry to win a decision.
  2. Cynthia Calvillo (-230): Calvillo should be able to out grapple Chookagian to a decision win. However, at -230, the price is too high for me to recommend a bet on.
  3. Shogun Rua (+152): Rua and Craig fought to a draw last year in a fight I thought Rua won. I expect the Brazilian to be able to stuff the takedowns and pick Craig apart on the feet for a decision win.
