The Ultimate Fighting Championship returns after a two-week hiatus and with another ESPN card in Washington DC this weekend (Dec. 7).

In the main event, Alistair Overeem battles short-notice replacement Jairzinho Rozenstruik at heavyweight. The co-main attraction sees a pivotal strawweight bout as Marina Rodriguez takes on Cynthia Calvillo. The main card airs live at 9 PM ET.

Odds taken Dec. 3.

Can Rozenstruik Stay Undefeated?

Alistair Overeem (45-17, 1 NC) is riding a two-fight winning streak in which he has TKO’d Sergei Pavlovich and Alexey Oleynik. Before that, he suffered a TKO loss to Curtis Blaydes and a violent knockout by Francis Ngannou. Overeem had his first professional fight in October of 1999 and is a Pride veteran. Throughout his legendary career, he has notable wins over the likes of Fabricio Werdum, Frank Mir, Brock Lesnar, Junior dos Santos, and Andrei Arlovski among others.

Jairzinho Rozenstruik (9-0) has only been in the UFC since February of this year. He TKO’d Junior Albini in the second round in his debut. His last two fights have lasted a combined 38 seconds: he knocked out Allen Crowder in nine seconds with a jab and then, at UFC 244 just a month ago, knocked out Arlovski in 29 seconds.

Fun fact: he is the only fighter on the UFC roster from Suriname.

This fight will be a good measuring stick for Rozenstruik. The 31-year-old appears to have the touch of death; if he connects he knocks you out. But, that has been against the lower-level competition in Albini and Crowder. Even Arlovski is not the same fighter as he used to be.

It should be a standup fight given both come from a kickboxing background. If Rozenstruik can connect early, he should be able to knockout Overeem. Yet, Overeem is a very good technical striker and should be able to use faints and head movement to last the first round and start to wear on Rozenstruik.

If/when the fight gets out of the first round, it is Overeem’s to lose, and he will win by TKO in the third or fourth.

Pick: Alistair Overeem (-125)

Marina Rodriguez vs. Cynthia Calvillo Odds

Who’s Winning Streak is Coming to an End?

Marina Rodriguez (12-0-1) has never lost in her career but does have a draw with Randa Markos on her resume. Since then, she beat Jessica Aguilar by decision and Tecia Torres by decision. She earned her way into the UFC with a TKO win on Dana White’s Contender Series Brazil in 2018. The 32-year-old is currently ranked ninth in the strawweight division.

Cynthia Calvillo (8-1) is on a two-fight winning streak, herself. Back in February, she beat Cortney Casey by decision. Before that, she beat Poliana Botelho by submission to get back into the win column after a tough loss to Carla Esparza.

She entered the UFC at 3-0 and has picked up huge wins over Amanda Cooper, Pearl Gonzalez, and Joanne Calderwood. While on the regional scenes, she beat Montana De La Rosa and Gillian Robertson.

This is a big spot for both girls to really shine in the strawweight division that is easily the top female division. A win here would cement them in the top-nine or eight and most likely get a top-five opponent next time out.

In this fight, I think Calvillo is the stronger fighter and has shown she can get the fight to the mat and get submission wins. The key for her will be to close the distance and get the fight to the ground. Rodriguez, meanwhile, will have to use her jab to keep the range and try and gas Calvillo and show off her impressive cardio.

Yet, I really like the underdog in this situation as I think Calvillo will either get a submission win or edge out a decision win.

Pick: Cynthia Calvillo (+110)
