The 40-23 Utah Jazz wrap up a five-game road trip on Monday against Luka Doncic and the surging Dallas Mavericks, who are winners of four straight. The tip-off is scheduled for 8:30 PM EST at the American Airlines Center.

Utah took care of business on Sunday night in OKC, taking down the Thunder by a score of 116-103. The Mavs meanwhile, secured a comeback victory on Saturday against the Sacramento Kings, despite being without Luka. However, he will return here.

The Jazz has certainly been the more dominant team in this matchup, beating Dallas in back-to-back meetings in 2021-22. Also of note is if the postseason began today, this would be the Western Conference 4 vs 5 opening round series in the NBA Playoffs Bracket.

Mitchell Carrying Utah

The Jazz is really coming into their own lately, going 8-2 in their last 10 games. After an embarrassing 124-90 loss to the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday, Utah responded in the best way imaginable in Oklahoma City, with none other than Donovan Mitchell leading the charge. Spida dropped 24 points and dished out a season-high 10 assists, but he also received lots of help from Bojan Bogdanovic, who was in his bag.

The 32-year-old erupted for a game-high 35 points while going a ridiculous 11 for 18 from three-point range in what turned out to be a lethal shooting night for Quin Snyder’s squad. They shot 44% from downtown (23 for 52) and the superior ball movement was a prime example of why they had countless good looks, collecting 27 assists as a team. Surprisingly, the Thunder absolutely bodied Utah in the paint, outscoring them 54-28. Needless to say, the lights out shooting made the difference.

The Jazz has struggled this season on back-to-backs this season, going just 3-6 and posting a 17-13 record on the road. But, Utah will be feeling confident here considering they’ve already defeated the Mavs twice by an average of 9.5 points.

Mavs Really Thriving

Doncic was dealing with a minor toe injury therefore Jason Kidd kept him out of the lineup on Saturday versus Sacramento. Early on, it looked like Dallas was going to really suffer without the Slovenian. But, the Mavs came back from a 19-point deficit and grabbed a well-deserved victory thanks to an all-around effort from the entire rotation.

Spencer Dinwiddie, who came over at the trade deadline from the Washington Wizards in the Kristaps Porzingis trade, absolutely flourished as the primary ball-handler, pouring in a team-high 36 points and also handing out seven assists. Backcourt partner Jalen Brunson was also a Swiss-Army knife, scoring 23 while grabbing three boards and six dimes. In fact, five different players finished with at least 11 points.

It was Dorian Finney-Smith who ultimately played hero, hitting a game-winning corner triple with 3.3 seconds left on the clock. It was the second time in a week Dallas overcame a huge deficit after shocking the Warriors on Thursday.

This Mavs team is shaping up to be a serious dark horse in the West and to see how well they played without Luka is very, very promising. Other guys are rising to the occasion and that’s exactly what needs to happen if a deep playoff run is going to be a reality. Currently, the Mavs are sitting at +4000 in the NBA title odds and +1800 in the odds to win the Western Conference, which is sixth-best in the West.

Jazz vs Mavericks Prediction

Both teams are playing solid basketball at the moment, but the Mavs’ 22-11 home record sticks out to me. Kidd’s group is firing on all cylinders and with Luka back in the mix, I believe they’re going to pull through and extend the win streak to five. It will be a close game, but with the spread at just 1.5, it’s worth taking Dallas.
