Book holds a 9-1 record as an Irish starter and completed 68% of his passes for a total of 2,628 yards and 19 touchdowns last year. He also led Notre Dame to their first College Football Playoff berth.
Does Book Have a Legit Shot at the Heisman?
The Heisman Trophy is one of the hardest to predict. According to Sports Odds History, Oregon’s Marcus Mariota (2014) is only one of the 10 players favored to win the award entering Week 1 in the past decade that has actually won the trophy.
Many past winners have started the season off the board and Book could emerge as a legit contender for the Heisman. He has the potential to lead Notre Dame back to the playoff if he can maintain his lethal 68-percent accuracy and build off his strong regular season.
Despite a strong 2018, there are still areas to improve. Book connected on just 39.5 percent of his passes thrown more than 20 yards downfield last season and needs to get better on his deep ball.
Competition Is Fierce for 2019 Heisman Trophy
Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa (+260 at Bovada) and Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence (+275 at Bovada) are the two clear favorites for the 2019 Heisman Trophy entering the season.
Tagovailoa is projected by some to be the No. 1 pick in 2020 and Lawrence to is projected to go No. 1 in 2021. The 2018 Heisman Trophy-winner, Kyler Murray, was the No.1-overall pick this past spring. Justin Fields (Ohio State) and Jalen Hurts ( Oklahoma) are also five-star prospects who are expected to contend for the award.

As a three-star prospect, Book just doesn’t have the same pedigree and overall qualities that have made others favorites in the 2019 Heisman Trophy odds. Despite being a lesser-known name, Book has been putting in work this offseason and could earn his way into the conversation.
You just can’t place Book in the same tier as the big guns, though, when you recall how he cracked under the pressure in the playoffs against Clemson, completing just 17 of 34 passes for 160 yards and losing a fumble on a scramble.
Injury to Cole Kmet Could Be Costly
Notre Dame only has two starting targets returning and Book has lost his best safety valve in Cole Kmet. Kmet suffered a broken collarbone at practice and is expected to miss the first month of the season.

Kmet was a breakout candidate for the 2019 season after caching 15 passes for 162 yards as a sophomore tight end. He missed two games after suffering a high-ankle sprain against Ball State. The Fighting Irish were assuming he would take another step forward.
Sophomores Tommy Tremble and George Takacs are the only other two scholarship tight ends on the roster.
While it isn’t a major blow for Book’s Heisman odds given the team’s strong depth in almost all other areas, it certainly will be a factor with Book having less time to develop chemistry with Kmet this year.
Verdict on Book’s Heisman Odds
Book is poised to have a massive season for the Fighting Irish. He know what it takes to get to the playoffs and what to do differently to win this time.
He will be counted on heavily by Notre Dame this year but jumping +5000 to +1600 odds when players around him are going down with injury is a little crazy.
I think Book has decent value at +3500 with Bovada, but his disappointing playoff combined with strong Heisman competition doesn’t justify his +1600 odds listed at MyBookie.
Let's have fun and keep it civil.
