Ohio State’s National Championship odds have improved to +700 at sportsbooks after beating Nebraska on College Gameday in Week 5.
Justin Fields is becoming a top contender for the Heisman, while the Buckeyes are dominating opponents on both sides of the ball.
Is Ohio State a good bet to win the national championship at their new odds?
2020 National Championship Odds
Buckeyes Dominating Opponents
Ohio State was supposed to get their first real test of the season in Week 5 against Nebraska. The Buckeyes had dominated their first four outmatched opponents, but were going to be challenged against Nebraska on ESPN’s College Gameday.
The Buckeyes proved that they were the real deal with a commanding 48-7 win over the Cornhuskers. Ohio State looked impressive in every aspect of the game, scoring on its first six possessions and leading 38-0 after the first half.
The offense, led by quarterback Justin Fields, has been exceptional. They’ve put up at least 40 points each week and are starting games very well. The Buckeyes are outscoring opponents 173-22 in the first half and have totalled over 500 yards in four straight games.
On defense, Ohio State’s offensive line is putting all sorts of pressure on opposing quarterbacks and not letting them make any big plays. The defense has allowed fewer that 300 yards of total offense in four straight games.
This is an all-around powerhouse.
Justin Fields a Heisman Candidate
His name isn’t as well-known as Tua Tagovailoa or Jalen Hurts, but Justin Fields belongs in the Heisman conversation.
Fields went 15-of-21 for 212 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions against Nebraska. He also rushed for 72 yards. The Georgia transfer has had a hand in 23 touchdowns this season, including 16 through the air.

Fields is one of only two quarterbacks in college football this season who have thrown over 15 TD passes without an interception. His accuracy is lethal, but it’s his dual-threat ability that makes him so dangerous and gives Ohio State a good chance at winning whenever they take the field.
Buckeyes Big 10 Favorites
The Buckeyes have become the favorites to win the Big 10 with preseason favorite Michigan underwhelming this season. The Wolverines needed overtime to beat Army and were blown out by Wisconsin the following week. Michigan did rebound with a 52-0 win over a lackluster Rutgers squad in Week 5, but this team still has plenty of question marks.
Nebraska isn’t one of the better teams in the Big 10, but the Buckeyes do have the edge over the top dogs. Wisconsin had looked great through four weeks, but they were given a bit of a reality check during their 24-17 win over Northwestern in Week 5.
Penn State is undefeated, while Michigan State is 4-1, but neither team has the offensive firepower or a QB as talented as Fields. It’s very possible the Buckeyes go undefeated this season and make the college football playoff.
Verdict on Ohio State’s National Championship Odds
I think Ohio State has good value to win the national championship at +700 odds.
LSU and Alabama may be the teams that match up best with OSU due to their prolific offenses, but this is a complete Buckeyes team that would have a realistic shot at winning.
Clemson is also a powerhouse, but the Tigers exhibited weakness when they narrowly avoided an upset with a 21-20 win over North Carolina this week.
Ohio State’s biggest games are yet to come, but this team is talented in every area and dominating on both sides of the ball. They have a good chance of going undefeated this season and making the college football playoff.
They might not be quite as good as a couple teams in the nation, but Ohio State is the best team in the Big 10 and would have a legit shot at winning if they make the playoff.
