Buckeyes Are Steamrolling Opponents

A Week 2 upset loss to Oregon feels like a distant memory for a surging Ohio State team that has reeled off five straight victories. The Buckeyes are rising in the National Championship odds after blowing out Indiana 54-7 in Week 8. Ryan Day’s team easily covered the spread as 21-point favorites.

Ohio State has covered the spread in five straight games, beating their opponents by an average margin of 41.6 points. QB CJ Stroud is one of the top quarterbacks in the country with 1,965 passing yards and 22 TDs, while running back TreVeyon Henderson has rushed for almost 700 yards and 11 scores.

Ohio State has dominated on both sides of the ball over the past several weeks. The defense has made major strides since the Oregon game, holding high-powered Maryland and Indiana offenses to a combined 24 points. The OSU defense has been excellent at getting to the quarterback, racking up 23 sacks over the past five weeks.

Nittany Lions Out To Play Spoiler

With Ohio State already having a loss on its resume, Penn State knows it can crush the Buckeyes’ College Football Playoff hopes with a Week 9 victory in Columbus. The Nittany Lions have fallen out of CFP contention with back-to-back losses to Iowa and Illinois. James Franklin’s team lost a nine-OT thriller in Week 8.

Penn State’s loss to Illinois was as ugly as it gets when it comes to upset losses. The Nittany Lions entered the game as near 25-point favorites and ended up getting outgained 357-62 in rushing yards by the Illini. Illinois won the game on a  two-point conversion catch by Casey Washington in the ninth overtime.

This was a deflating loss for the Nittany Lions, who are 1-3 ATS in their last four games. The team impressed with early-season wins over Wisconsin and Auburn, but they’re yet to dominate an opponent. They should be fired up against OSU, but it’s important to note QB Sean Clifford is still dealing with an unspecified injury.

Expected Line Movement

Ohio State is already one of the heaviest bet teams in College Football, and their play over the past five weeks is only going to increase the amount of wagers. The one thing that could change things is the fact PSU has played the Buckeyes tight in recent years. Ohio State has won the past five meetings, but Penn State has covered in four of those.

It’s still hard to envision much money coming in on the Nittany Lions considering their shocking upset loss to Illinois and the Sean Clifford injury. Penn State was decimated on the ground by Chase Brown and Joshua McCray in Week 8, which means OSU RB TreVeyon Henderson could be in for a big night.

Although Penn State would love nothing more than to crush Ohio State’s CFP chances, a key stat is the Nittany Lions are 2-17-1 ATS in their last 20 games following a loss. The Buckeyes are steamrolling opponents right now, so expect the line to move in OSU’s direction leading up to kickoff.
