You Can Bet on What Comes First: Philip Rivers Retiring or Baby Number 10

At the rate Philip Rivers’ family is growing, TLC may be giving the NFL quarterback a reality show sometime in the future.

Rivers welcomed his ninth child to the world back in March. His oldest child, Halle, is 17 and the youngest, Anna, is just eight months old.

Could number ten be on the way soon?

Sportsbooks have released odds on what scenario will present itself first: Rivers and his wife announcing a tenth child or the 37-year-old quarterback retiring from the NFL.

The opening odds for this prop bet has Rivers and his wife, Tiffany, announcing baby No. 10 as the -160 favorite early on. The odds of Rivers announcing his retirement before that have been set at +120.

Halle was born in 2002, when Rivers was only 21 years old. Over the years, the Chargers QB and his wife had eight other children: Caroline (13), Grace (12), Gunner (10), Sarah (8), Peter (7), Rebecca (5) and Clare (3) and Anna.

Prior to having his ninth child this year, Rivers told USA Today that he and his wife were hoping to have more kids.

The question is, especially based on Rivers’ play of late, will a tenth child come before retirement?

What Happened To Rivers This Season?

Rivers was leading the NFL in passing yards up until Week 10 when Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott overtook the eight-time Pro Bowl pivot.

Rivers got off to such a great start to the season and while he wasn’t helping the Chargers put up wins, he was still proving to be a legitimate No. 1 quarterback.

That is because he threw for 310 or more yards in five of Los Angeles’ first seven games this season.

That is when things began to go south for Rivers, whose completion rate has been below 55 percent in back-to-back weeks. During that stretch, Rivers has thrown three TD passes and seven interceptions. He’s also been sacked seven times.

Rivers currently ranks sixth in all-time passing yards with 57,825 and could likely still move into the top five, sitting roughly 3,500 yards behind Dan Marino.

With a Los Angeles Chargers team out of the playoff picture and an uncertain future moving forward, there are many question marks surrounding the franchise and it starts with Rivers.

Retirement Is Closer Than You Think For Rivers

While Tom Brady has had solid pass protection that’s allowed the six-time Super Bowl champion to play well into his 40s, the same can’t be said about Rivers.

He has taken more punishment and suffered more injuries than Brady, so his career is closer to coming to an end than you may think.

That  is why there’s a lot more value in betting on the soon-to-be 38-year-old Rivers retiring before announcing a 10th child.

Rivers broke into the league in 2004 and is still chasing a Super Bowl ring. In his 15th season, he’s watched fellow QBs that began their careers in 2004 win one or more Super Bowl championships — Ben Roethlisberger and Eli Manning.

It may be time for Rivers to hang up his cleats and spend more time with his growing family.
