Bryce Young has become the overwhelming favorite to be the first overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft odds.

The Alabama quarterback’s odds of being the first selection jumped from -300 to -1400 on Monday when it was reported he had canceled the remainder of his pre-draft visits to teams. That obviously is a strong indication Young has been told by the Carolina Panthers that they will select him #1 when the draft begins on April 27 in Kansas City.

Bryce Young Cancels Meetings

Young had visited the Panthers, Houston Texans and Las Vegas Raiders. The Texans will pick second and the Raiders have the #7 selection.

The Indianapolis Colts, who have the #4 pick, were also expecting a visit from Young. However, those plans changed Monday.

The Panthers have made no secret of their desire to draft a franchise-type quarterback. It is why they traded with the Bears for the top pick last month, a deal that netted Chicago wide receiver DJ Moore as well as the #9 pick and a second-round pick this year, a first-round pick in 2024 and a second-round pick in 2025.

Over the past three seasons, the Panthers have used six different starting QBs, a list that includes Kyle Allen, Teddy Bridgewater, Sam Darnold, Will Grier, Baker Mayfield and PJ Walker. Carolina has compiled a 17-33 record during that span and has not made the playoffs since 2017.

Who is Bryce Young?

Young won the Heisman Trophy in 2021 but slipped to sixth in the voting last season. He completed 64.5% of his passes in 2022 for 3,328 yards and 32 touchdowns with five interceptions in 12 games.

During his Heisman-winning season, Young played in 15 games and threw for 4,82 yards and 47 TDs.

Young finished his three-year career at Alabama with a 65.8 completion percentage, 8,356 yards passing, 80 touchdown passes and 12 picks.

A native of Pasadena, California, Young was measured at 5-foot-10 and 204 pounds at the NFL Scouting Combine with 30 ½-inch arms and 9 ¾-inch hands.

CJ Stroud’s Odds Tumble

Prior to Monday’s news, Young was a -120 favorite to be the #1 pick but just narrowly. Ohio State quarterback CJ Stroud was the second choice at -105.

However, Stroud’s odds have now slid to +700 in the NFL Draft odds as can be seen in the chart above. Young just surpassed Stroud as the favorite a week ago.

Early speculation had the Panthers leaning in the direction of Stroud. However, Young apparently won over owner David Tepper, general manager Scott Fitterer and new coach Frank Reich on his recent visit to Charlotte.

Stroud now seems most likely to go to the Texanss at #2, though two other quarterbacks – Florida’s Anthony Richardson and Kentucky’s Will Levis — could slip into that spot.

Is There Value in Betting Bryce Young?

The -1400 odds mean there is a 93.33% implied probability that the Panthers will choose Young first overall. Since it seems like a done deal and the odds would provide little payoff, there just isn’t much to gain by betting on Young at -1400.
