Chargers’ Anthony Lynn Takes Over as the Favorite to Be Next NFL Coach Fired After Being Shutout by Patriots

When it comes to NFL head coaches, oddsmakers have taken a gaze into who has no future and determined that Anthony Lynn of the Los Angeles Chargers is that guy.
Sunday, the Chargers suffered an embarrassing 45-0 rout handed them by the New England Patriots. The result was Lynn leapfrogging past Matt Nagy (Chicago Bears), Doug Marrone (Jacksonville Jaguars), and Adam Gase (New York Jets) into the favorite’s role.
Lynn is the +160 chalk to get the ziggy next. A week ago, he was situated at odds of +450 as the fourth choice in this betting market.

Gase, who was the odds-on -185 favorite last week, slid down to second betting choice at +215.
Chargers Charge To Bottom
In 2018, Lynn brought the Chargers to a 12-4 record. They earned an AFC Wild Card berth and won a road playoff game.
The future seemed bright. Then everything went off the rails. They are 8-20 over the past two seasons.
Sunday’s setback was the worst loss in franchise history. The previous mark was a 49-6 defeat to Kansas City in 1964. It was the first time the Chargers were shutout since 2014.

It was also the largest road shutout ever recorded in NFL history by a team entering the game with a losing record.
Last season, the Chargers slumped to the AFC West basement, going 5-11. Poised for a second straight double-digit losing campaign, that’s bad news for Lynn.
He got the Chargers gig after predecessor Mike McCoy lost 12 and 11 games in successive seasons.
Lynn Not In Jeopardy
Sunday’s loss is the type of sloppy performance that causes the firing of coaches. The Chargers surrendered two special teams TDs – one on a punt return and one on a blocked field goal.
Yet the word in NFL circles is that for the time being, Lynn will remain on the payroll.

NFL sources are reporting that it’s the intention of Chargers management and ownership to ride of the current season. They will then assess the football operations of the team following the conclusion of the season.
Williams Pays The Price
The Jets fired a coach Monday. No, it wasn’t Gase.
Defensive coordinator Gregg Williams was sent packing following Sunday’s 31-28 last-season loss to the Las Vegas Raiders. It was Williams who called for an all-out blitz on the game-winning touchdown.

The decision left rookie cornerback Lamar Jackson in single coverage on Raiders speedy wideout Henry Ruggs III. Raiders quarterback Derek Carr found Ruggs for a 46-yard TD with five seconds left in the fourth quarter.
Players on both sides of the ball were critical of the defensive call in post-game comments. Jets captain Marcus Maye was among those who questioned whether the team should’ve been situating themselves in a safer defensive formation.
What’s A Guy Gotta Do To Get Fired?
Evidently, the decision that the Jets are making is that Gase should be wearing the 0-16 tag, if that’s their destiny. The Chargers appear willing to wait it out.
The 1-11 Jaguars are also operating in that mode. Jettisoning key players prior to Game 1, it was clear that a long season was in store for Jacksonville.

A guy who suddenly is looking vulnerable is Philadelphia’s, Doug Pederson. He might have bought himself time by inserting Jalen Hurts at QB in place of struggling starter Carson Wentz. That move is something Eagles GM Howie Roseman has sought to see.

If no one is getting a pink slip over the remaining four weeks of the regular season, then the attention is coming back to Gase. He was the +325 chalk at the season’s outset.
Should the Jets go 0-16, his dismissal will come shortly after the 16th loss is recorded.
At +215, that’s a pretty solid price to be able to lock in on a winless coach.
