  • The Colts enter the NFL offseason with the most cap space in the league
  • While still considered a contender, their average Super Bowl odds have slipped to +1700
  • Is Indy a good value bet for Super Bowl 54?

The Indianapolis Colts’ impressive run to the 2019 NFL playoffs ended with a loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC’s Divisional Round.

The Colts have now entered the offseason as one of the top contenders to win Super Bowl 54. They also possess the most cap space of any team in the league to improve for next season.

After owning average odds of +1300 on February 13, Indy’s Super Bowl odds have drifted out to an average of +1700.

Colts Building Off Successful 2018

Despite a 1-5 start to least season, Indy went on a remarkable run of nine wins over their next ten games. While at one point the playoffs looked to be out of reach, they ended only one game behind the Houston Texans in AFC South standings.

Finishing second saw them hit the road in Houston for the Wild Card round where they came away 21-7 winners. The run ended at Arrowhead with a 31-13 loss to the Chiefs.

With a healthy Andrew Luck, the Colts scored the most points in their division with 433. That was only behind the Chiefs’ 565 and the Patriots’ 436 in the AFC. Overall, they scored the fifth-most in the league behind the Rams and Saints who also finished in the top four.

High Expectations for Colts in 2019

Heading into the 2019 season, expectations are high for the Colts. Of AFC South teams, they are clearly the most favored team to win the Super Bowl. With current odds of +1600, the next closest team is the Texans at +2800.

They’ve also positioned themselves to have plenty of options to improve for 2019.

Indy was able to carry over just under $50 million of unused cap space from last year, which now gives them the most cap space of any team this offseason. With an estimated $102 million of space, the Colts could be major players in NFL free agency.

With an estimate of $102 million of space, the Colts could be major players in NFL free agency.

The Colts are also in a good spot to improve through the draft with nine draft picks. This includes their first-rounder (26th overall), plus two second round picks. With all this capital, it’s really up to General Manager Chris Ballard on where he wants to invest in his roster, because he has plenty of options.

It could be finding a quality number two receiver to play opposite TY Hilton, or it could be improving a pass-rush which ranked 19th in total sacks with 38.

The Colts could also look to improve their secondary with a splashy free agent signing like Landon Collins. They’re also hoping to bring back S Clayton Geathers, who’s currently a free agent. Either way defensive reinforcements will be needed for a team which finished 19th against the pass in YPG.

Bet the Colts at Current Odds

The fact odds have slipped on the Colts has created a great buying opportunity. With the shortest Super Bowl odds in the AFC South, should they win their division, they’d have to be in the running for a first-round bye.

Though the Chiefs, Pats, and Chargers may have shorter odds, one day Brady and the Pats will surely take a step back, and can anyone really trust the Chargers?

I think +2000 odds are only going to shorten in the coming months, especially if the Colts make a couple big free agent signings and/or should they start the season strong. Buy now if you can.
