  • A look at the Super Bowl 57 first injury report for the game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles
  • Chiefs RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire has been activated from IR but remains questionable for the game
  • Kansas City has placed WR Mecole Hardman on IR, so he’s out for the game

In the first injury report for Super Bowl 57 between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs, there’s already been a casualty.

The Chiefs have placed wide receiver Mecole Hardman on injured reserve. He’ll miss the big game due to a pelvis injury.

However, Kansas City has activated running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire from IR. He’s been out since Week 11 with a high ankle sprain.

Philadelphia is reporting no serious injuries. Neither Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts, who’s been battling a late-season shoulder ailment, or Patrick Mahomes, his Kansas City counterpart, are showing with an injury designation. Mahomes suffered a high ankle sprain in the Chiefs’ AFC Divisional Round win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Oddsmakers are listing the Eagles as 1.5-point favorites in the game. Philadelphia is given an implied probability of victory of 52.9%. However, 63% of NFL public betting splits are currently backing Kansas City.

The game is being broadcast by FOX. Kickoff is set for 6:30 pm ET at State Farm Stadium on Sunday, February 12.

Philadelphia Eagles Injury Report

There were five Eagles players who were given all of last week’s practice time off in order to heal. That list was including three starters – left guard Landon Dickerson – (elbow), as well as nickleback CB Avonte Maddox (toe).

Backup center Cam Jurgens (hip) and second-string defensive end Robert Quinn (foot) also took the week off. However, all of these ailments are considered nagging injuries. The downtime was designed to serve as a healing process. All five players are expected to be good to go on Sunday.

The Eagles were opting not to activate third-string center Brett Toth from the PUP, so he’ll be out for the game. Also out is backup guard Josh Sills. Last week, Sills was indicted by a Guernsey County (Ohio) Common Pleas Court grand jury on one count of alleged rape and one count of the alleged kidnapping. Both charges are first-degree felonies.

Kansas City Chiefs Injury Report

There’s real cause for concern inside the Kansas City wide receiver room. Hardman’s absence is just the tip of the iceberg. He caught two passes for 10 yards in the AFC Championship Game win over the Cincinnati Bengals. That was Hardman’s first game action since Week 9.

Two of the Chiefs’ three starting WR are listed as questionable for the Super Bowl. JuJu Smith-Schuster is battling a knee injury. That could make a play on the under on Smith-Schuster’s receiving yards (38.5) an easy Super Bowl bet.

Kadarius Toney, a pleasant surprise since his trade-deadline acquisition from the New York Giants, is fighting both ankle and hamstring problems. However, the sense is that both players are trending toward playing.

On defense, weak side linebacker Willie Gay is questionable due to a shoulder injury. As well, right cornerback L’Jarius Snead must clear concussion protocol after suffering a concussion the AFC Championship Game. He’s also listed as questionable.

How Could Injuries Affect the Eagles vs Chiefs Lines?

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid wouldn’t commit to starting Edwards-Helaire over Ronald Jones III as Kansas City’s third running back for the Super Bowl. Edwards-Helaire was KC’s top rusher a year ago. In 10 games this season, Edwards-Helaire accounted for 302 rushing yards, 151 receiving yards and six touchdowns.

Were he to see any significant amount of playing time, it could limit the touches given to Jerick McKinnon and rookie Isiah Pacheco. That might make a play on the under on Pacheco’s total of 11.5 carries for the game an astute move in the Chiefs Super Bowl 57 player props.

Marques Valdez-Scantling is the only Kansas City starting WR without an injury designation. The uncertainty surrounding Toney, coupled with Hardman’s absence, is also impacting the Chiefs’ special teams. Toney is first on the depth chart for Kansas City punt returners. Hardman’s 9.2 yards per return on punts this season leads the team.

Mahomes was able to play in the AFC Championship Game on his injured ankle and it didn’t seem to affect his performance. Hurts has made three starts since missing Weeks 16 and 17 due to his shoulder injury. However, his average passing yardage over those three games of 168.0 yards is well below his season average of 246.7 yards.
