A Top Favorite Generally Gets to the Super Bowl

Studying the odds of Super Bowl participants in recent seasons, in the majority of cases, a preseason contender is right there at the end of the season.

In 2019, by the time the season opened, the New England Patriots had been bet down to the +400 chalk, closely followed by the Chiefs at +600. But the 49ers weren’t considered to be in serious contention. San Francisco opened the season at odds of +4000 to win Super Bowl 54.

The previous season, both Super Bowl 53 participants – the Patriots (+600) and Los Angeles Rams (+1000) – began the season at relatively short odds. The Patriots were favored to win it all, and did.

New England launched Week 1 of the 2017 NFL campaign pegged as the +275 chalk. The Pats got to the Super Bowl this year as well. However, they were beaten in the big game by the Philadelphia Eagles. The season-opening odds on the Eagles were +4000.

Early Movers and Shakers

The opening line on Super Bowl 55 hasn’t even been up for two weeks. Already, though, some teams have made some bold moves up the board.

The New Orleans Saints, 13-3 this season, dropped from +1400 to +1000, moving ahead of the perennially-contending Patriots (+1100).  The Tennessee Titans displayed significant movement that was no doubt inspired by their run to the AFC Championship Game. Tennessee’s odds dropped from +5000 to +3000.

The Eagles saw their line shift down to +3300 from +2800. The Raiders are moving to Las Vegas and they’re also moving in the Super Bowl 55 line. Their odds went down from +5000 to +3500.

One of the more surprising shifts saw the Los Angeles Chargers go from +2500 to +1600. The Chargers were 12-4 and a playoff team in 2018 but slumped to 5-11 this season.

This bold move could be caused by speculation that six-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback Tom Brady is leaving the Patriots for the Chargers. Brady tweeted a cryptic photo of himself earlier this week silhouetted against the backdrop of Gillette Stadium.

There were also some puzzling moves from the bottom of the odds board. The Cincinnati Bengals, an NFL-worst 2-14, improved from +10000 all the way to +5500. The 3-12-1 Detroit Lions jumped from +1000 to +7000.  The Tampa Bay Buccaneers went from +6000 to +5000. The Bucs were 7-9 this season, finishing on a 4-2 run.

Both the Pittsburgh Steelers (+1600 to +2200) and Minnesota Vikings (+2500 to +3000) saw their lines fading fast.

Bills, Eagles Offer Value Bets

Philadelphia was absolutely riddled by injury this season at the skill positions. The Eagles were basically left with practice squad players as their starting receivers for much of the year and still made the playoffs. That level of malady shouldn’t happen two years in a row. In the weak NFC East, Philly could bounce back in a big way.

If Brady does leave and there’s upheaval in New England, the Buffalo Bills could pick up the pieces in the AFC East. The lack of love for the Bills is somewhat surprising after a 10-6 season and a playoff game. At +4000, they’re an attractive play.

Bettors are wise to fade Pittsburgh. The playoffs were there for the taking two years in a row and the Steelers self-destructed.

Don’t Bet on Repeat Performances

Expecting either the Chiefs or 49ers to do it two years in a row is defying both logic and history. Since 2000 just two teams – New England and Seattle – have gone to successive Super Bowls.

No NFC team has lost the Super Bowl and made it back the next year since the 1971 Dallas Cowboys.

The Ravens weren’t a mirage this season. NFL MVP Lamar Jackson is just 23. He’s going to keep getting better.

Baltimore will rebound from this season’s playoff heartbreak.

Pick: Baltimore Ravens (+800)
