  • Quarterback Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers agreed to terms on a 4-year, $200-million deal that makes him the highest paid player in NFL history
  • Green Bay’s 2023 Super Bowl odds shortened from +1450 to +900
  • Rodgers is the reigning two-time NFL MVP

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers is staying with the Green Bay Packers. Amidst all the consternation, surrounded by rumor, ultimately Rodgers ended up opting for the status quo.

Then again, when the status quo pays like this, who wouldn’t make that decision? Rodgers and the Packers agreed to terms on a four-year, $200-million deal that is making him the highest-paid player in NFL history.

It’s also making the Pack a much shorter Super Bowl bet. Across the leading sportsbooks, the Packers opened Tuesday tied for fifth in the Super Bowl odds.  Green Bay was listed at average odds of +1450 to win Super Bowl 57. That betting line has since shortened to +900.

Rodgers Move Generating Line Movement

There was lots of action early Tuesday across the leading online sports betting sites as the Rodgers news broke.

At Barstool Sportsbook, the Packers shortened to +900 to win next season’s Super Bowl. That gave Green Bay the shortest odds of any NFC club. Entering the day, the Packers and San Francisco 49ers were co-fifth betting choices at odds of +1450.

Over at Caesars Sportsbook, Mr Rodgers’ decision to stay in the same neighborhood was also creating seismic shifts in the betting markets. Caesars’ odds of the Packers winning the 2023 Super Bowl shortened from +1500 to +1200. Green Bay’s NFC Championship odds shifted from +600 to +500.

Caesars also has Rodgers currently as the +700 favorite in the NFL MVP odds. He’ll be seeking to win MVP for the third straight year.

Rodgers Not Following Favre Pattern

There are tremendous similarities in the career trajectories of Rodgers and Brett Favre, the man he replaced under center for the Packers. Both were named NFL MVP mutiple times while at the helm of the Green Bay offense. Each led the Packers to one Super Bowl title.

However, things didn’t end well for Favre in Green Bay. He left the Packers, finishing up his career with stints playing for first the New York Jets and later their hated rivals the Minnesota Vikings.

With 2020 first-round Jordan Love waiting in the wings, there was plenty of speculation that this would also be the denouement to Rodgers’ Green Bay playing days. There was significant speculation that he might follow the Peyton Manning path and wind up his playing days with the Denver Broncos. The Pittsburgh Steelers, who recently lost Ben Roethlisberger to retirement, were also viewed as a potential Rodgers destination,

Ultimately, those closest to Rodgers insist the choice came down to staying with the Packers or announcing his retirement.

Should You Be Backing the Packers?

There’s a definite Hall of Fame induction ceremony awaiting Rodgers when he does doff his football helmet for the final time. Individually, few in the game can rival his accomplishments.

Rodgers won a Super Bowl and was named MVP of the game. He’s a four-time NFL MVP and a 10-time Pro Bowl selection. He holds a half-dozen NFL records.

Still, when it comes to the ultimate achievement – championship wins – Rodgers takes a back seat to numerous QBs. As a starting QB, he’s won as many Super Bowl titles as Brad Johnson, Jeff Hostetler, Joe Flacco and Trent Dilfer. That would be one.

Rodgers is 11-10 in the postseason and 1-4 in NFC Championship Games. Green Bay has failed to get to the Super Bowl each of the past two years as the NFC’s #1 seed.

The Packers are a better bet with Rodgers at QB. However, history shows that Rodgers isn’t the best bet to win the Super Bowl.
