  • He has more sacks than 10 NFL teams

Shaquil Barrett is finally on the NFL Defensive Player of the Year radar. It’s about time. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers edge rusher is doing things this season that no NFL player had previously achieved.

Barrett is the first defender in league history register at least nine sacks and an interception in the first four games of the NFL season.

Sportsbooks have pegged Barrett as the fourth betting choice in the NFL DPOY odds at +1200.

*Odds taken on 10/02/19.

The player immediately ahead of Barrett in the odds, Cleveland Browns EDGE Myles Garrett, has three fewer sacks than Barrett.

Barrett Is Dominant

Through four games, these are Barrett’s numbers – 20 tackles, seven tackles for loss, 10 quarterback hits, nine sacks, three forced fumbles, and one interception. He’s part of a Tampa Bay defense that is currently #1 in the NFL at stopping the run, allowing opponents to gain just 59.3 yards per game on the ground.

His nine sacks are the equal of four NFL teams – the San Francisco 49ers, Los Angeles Chargers, Detroit Lions and Indianapolis Colts – and are more than 10 other teams in the league.

He collected four sacks in Tampa Bay’s Week 3 loss to the New York Giants. In last week’s 55-40 shock victory against the NFC champion Los Angeles Rams, Barrett accounted for an interception of LA QB Jared Goff. He also sacked Goff once.

Best of all for Barrett, he’s 27, in the prime of his career, and on a one-year contract. If he keeps this up, he’ll become a very wealthy man in free agency.

Where’s Donald?

It’s been a rough month to be named Donald.

While Barrett was dominating Sunday, across the field, Rams defensive tackle and reigning two-time NFL DPOY Aaron Donald wasn’t much of a factor in the game. He finished with four tackles, one solo, and collected nary a sack.

According to ESPN Stats & Info, Donald has been double teamed an NFL-high 82 times. Donald has one sack, 10 combined tackles, and three QB hits through four games.

Last season, he led the NFL with 20.5 sacks.

Mack The Knife

While Donald maintains his status as the betting favorite despite his slow start, Chicago Bears EDGE Khalil Mack, who was the second-best NFL defender last season after Donald, is going strongly. He’s recorded 4.5 sacks and 14 tackles through four games.

The the three-time All-Pro and former NFL DPOY will face his old team, the Oakland Raiders, on Sunday. Since he was dealt at the start of the last season, Mack has recorded 18 sacks.

The Raiders have 17 as a team. Mack’s also forced 10 fumbles, 9 of those being strip sacks.

Barrett Worth A Bet

It could be that Barrett is off to a fast start. Or it could be that he’s on his way to a epic campaign.

Remember, he’s in a contract year.

At +1200, he’s at a price that can’t be ignored. Don’t go all in but definitely get a piece of that action.

If you don’t, you might live to regret it.
