  • Here are some NFL team trends to keep in mind when planning wagers for Week 5 of the regular season
  • The Detroit Lions are the over kings of the NFL
  • As far as the Seattle Seahawks are concerned, the earlier the kickoff, the better for betting on them

When it comes to assessing the NFL team trends in terms of betting choices for Week 5 of the regular season, the Detroit Lions are the gift that keeps on giving.

In real numbers, such as the NFL standings, things aren’t pretty for the Lions. Detroit is in the NFC North basement at 1-3.

However, the Lions are 3-1 against the spread and 4-0 on the over. In fact, Detroit is the only of the NFL’s 32 teams to have gone over in all four games so far this season.

Last week, Detroit lost 48-45 at home to the Seattle Seahawks, keeping another NFL team trend going. The Seahawks are 14-1 straight up in the last 15 times when the club has kicked off at 1 pm ET.

Entering Week 5, these are the NFL team betting trends to keep in mind prior to placing any wagers.

Lions Going Over and Over Again

The Lions are the NFL’s #1 scoring offense (35.0 points per game. Detroit is the NFL’s #32-scoring defense (35.3 points allowed per game). In fact, they are the first team in NFL history to both score 140+ points and allow 140+ points through the first four weeks of the season.

This is great news if you like to play the total. In that case, being a Lions bettor is totally awesome. Not only have they gone over in all four games, but Detroit is also going over by on average 15.13 points per game.

NFL Team Trends: Detroit Lions Over Record

Game Total Points Over
Philadelphia 38 Detroit 35 48.5 24.5
Detroit 36 Washington 27 48 15
Minnesota 28 Detroit 24 51.5 0.5
Seattle 48 Detroit 45 48 45

Last week, the total for the Seahawks vs Lions game was 48 points. The two teams combined to score 93 points. In Week 5, Detroit is at New England. The total is set at 47 in the opening Lions vs Patriots odds.

Eagles Are Second Quarter Over Experts

It could be argued with merit that the Philadelphia Eagles are a slow-starting football team. In Week 4, they fell behind 14-0 at home to the Jacksonville Jaguars in the first quarter.

The second quarter, though, again belonged to the Eagles. They outscored the Jaguars 20-0 to take the lead into the locker room at halftime.

It was the third time this season that the Eagles had posted a 20+ point second quarter. How’s this for an NFL team trend – Philadelphia has scored at least 17 points in every second quarter. In total, the Eagles have accounted for 85 second-quarter points through four games.

In the Eagles vs Arizona Cardinals odds for Week 5, Caesars Sportsbook is offering +109 odds that the second quarter will be the highest-scoring quarter of the game.

Seahawks Are Early Birds Who Get Wins

One of the age-old beliefs in NFL team trends is that you always bet against a West Coast team that is playing a 1 pm ET kickoff. The Seattle Seahawks are the exception to that rule.

Seattle’s Week 4 win at Detroit improved the Seahawks to 14-1 straight up when playing at 1 pm ET, or what is also 10 am PT. The Seahawks are 10-4-1 in NFL picks against the spread over those same 15 games. Seattle’s only setback during this 15-game stretch was a 44-34 loss at Buffalo in 2020.

Seattle is at New Orleans in Week 5 for another 1 pm ET start. The Seahawks have another 1 pm ET start this season on December 24 at Kansas City. There’s also a game on November 13 in Germany against Tampa Bay with a 9:30 am ET kickoff time, or 6:30 am Seattle time.

Close Counting In NFL Team Trends

Through four weeks, there have been 64 NFL games played. Of those 64 games, 38 of them, or 59.38% have been decided by the margin of one score.

Narrowing it down even further, 23 of those 38 games, or 60.53%, were decided by the margin of a field goal or less.

NFL Team Trends: One Score Games

Week Games One Score Outcomes
1 16 9
2 16 9
3 16 11
4 16 9

Checking the Week 5 NFL odds and taking into account all of these one-score games, you might want to consider underdog plays on the Giants (+8.5 vs Green Bay), the Steelers (+14 at Buffalo), and the 4-0 ATS Falcons (+8.5) at Tampa Bay. Maybe check into the NFL public betting splits and see where the money is going.

The NFL loves itself some parity, and so far this season, parity rules. Heading into Week 5, the most common won-lost slate in the NFL team trends is 2-2. There are 15 of 32 teams with that record.

Josh McDaniels and His Ongoing Relationship With Denver

When the Las Vegas Raiders beat the Denver Broncos 32-23 in Week 4, it gave Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels his first NFL victory since 2010.

One thing didn’t change for McDaniels, though. Every win he’s ever recorded as an NFL coach has involved the Broncos. He’s 1-3 as Raiders coach, with that lone win coming against Denver. McDaniels went 8-8 as coach of the Broncos in 2009. He was 3-9 in 2010 when Denver fired him.

The Raiders and Broncos are meeting again on November 20.
