A perpetually rebuilding Houston Texans squad will be looking for its next head coach once again in 2023.

The writing appears to have been on the wall for some time, as Smith was finally let out of his misery on Sunday after just one season with the team.

Smith may have known he was being thrown overboard before kickoff on Sunday. The Texans won their final game but lost the right to the first overall pick in the NFL draft.

Let’s take a look at who could replace Lovie Smith as the Houston Texans’ next head coach.

Houston, who at one point had the highest Super Bowl odds at +15000 to win Super Bowl 57, went 3-13-1 this season.

Lovie Failed in Houston

Lovie Smith was brought in to be a steady hand for a perpetually rebuilding franchise. Since firing Bill O’Brien midway through the 2020 season, the Texans have had three different head coaches. Veteran defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel finished out the final 12 games before the David Culley experiment also lasted only one year.

Although Lovie managed to galvanize the squad in 2022 and had the Texans playing hard early in the season. However, the Texans fell off a cliff in October.

Houston lost nine straight games coming out of their Week 6 bye before winning two of their final three games to lose out on the first overall pick.

Despite being a defensive specialist throughout his long and storied coaching career, Lovie failed to work his magic this season. Houston finished with the 30th overall in total yardage and 27th in points surrendered per game on defense.

Thankfully, whoever steps into the job next will have plenty to work with.

Rebuilding the Texans

Houston will likely want to make a decision on their next head coach fairly quickly. The Texans need to organize a staff with gusto to formulate a plan for the draft season.

Armed with both the 2nd and 12th overall selections, the Texans have plenty of firepower in the 2023 NFL Draft odds. In fact, Houston has a total of five selections in the top 73 picks. Making this a crucial off-season for the Texans.

After trying, and failing, to bring in veteran head coaches over the past two seasons, surely Houston will take a different approach entering 2023. An offensive-minded head coach would make a lot of sense for a team that’s struggled to move the football.

Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bienemy has perhaps the best resume of any head coaching candidate. As Andy Reid’s right-hand man, Bienemy has been instrumental in designing one of the greatest offensive forces the league has ever seen. A crucial part of creating the dynamic Chiefs offense, Bienemy would be a welcome sight for a Texans offense that finished last in yards per play this season (4.7).

Best Bet for Houston Texans Next Head Coach

While Bienemy would be the perfect fit in Houston, the Texans have made a number of interview requests thus far. Interestingly, after hiring two veteran coaches in their 60s, all of the candidates are fairly young. The Texans brass finally appears to be ready to hire someone for the long haul.

Thus far, Houston has requested interviews with Lions OC Ben Johnson (36), 49ers defensive co-ordinator Demeco Ryans (38), Eagles DC Jonathon Gannon (40), Denver Broncos DC Ejiro Evero (42), and Eagles OC Shane Steichen (37). Clearly, the youth movement has begun.

These five names will be at the top of each coach-needy teams wish list this off-season. That being said, one name will stand out in Houston. San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Demeco Ryans has been on the fast track to head coach for years. The former Texans linebacker is the architect of the best defense in the NFL. San Francisco’s defense finished 1st in points per game, yards per game, and opponents’ points per play this season, while suffocating offenses all year long.

Ryans is a Texans legend, having won the Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2007, and making two Pro Bowls. This hiring makes too much sense.

Pick: Demeco Ryans (+800)
