  • Ohio State Buckeyes Head Coach Urban Meyer announced his retirement at the conclusion of this season.
  • Which coaches could be in line for another vacant coaching position in the state of Ohio with the Cleveland Browns also looking for a new HC?
  • Could Meyer figure into the Browns’ picture for the 2019 season?

After seven years as Head Coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes and a 12-1 record this season, Buckeyes’ Head Coach Urban Meyer will be retiring from coaching at the end of the season due to health-related issues.

The Buckeyes were 9-1 in Big Ten play and finished as the sixth-ranked team in the nation. They will finish the year on January 1 in the Rose Bowl against Washington.

Meyer Steps Aside Due To Health Concerns

The 54-year-old Meyer has been dealing with a congenital arachnoid cyst on his brain which required surgery back in 2014.

Despite managing the pain this year, he was often seen struggling on the sidelines during the season and revealed he’s been dealing with painful headaches.

If Meyer were to consider returning to the sidelines in 2019, whether it be at the college level or in the pros, he’s certainly more than qualified.

In his 17 years as a college head coach he owns a 186-32 regular season record and 11-3 record in bowl games.

Browns Searching For Their Man

With Hue Jackson recently let go from the Browns, Cleveland is looking to start a new chapter in 2019 with a new head coach of their own.

With a young star QB in Baker Mayfield and a team full of talent and potential, the Browns could be an attractive destination for Meyer, an Ohio native.

But the Browns have been a rumored destination for numerous candidates such as fellow college coach Lincoln Riley of the Oklahoma Sooners.

Ex-NFL coaches are also in the mix with Mike McCarthy now available after being let go in Green Bay and ex-Cardinals Head Coach Bruce Arians who’s openly expressed interest in the position.

Bet Meyer Staying In Buckeye Nation

Success in college has not always translated to success in the NFL as many past college coaches have found out.

That’s been the case with coaches going directly to the pros without taking time off. Meyer may in fact one day return to coaching. But in my opinion it may be at least a couple years or more down the road once he’s cleared by his doctors and if he still has the itch to compete.

Give Meyer’s interview a listen and you can’t help but see a man who sounds like his time in coaching has ended. But on top of that, he’s already talking about finding ways to stay involved with the Buckeyes’ program in some other way.

If you have a large bankroll that can be tied up for a while then the NO is the only way to go.
