Two of the more dangerous offenses but better defenses face off against each other which should make for some exciting playoff-like hockey.

Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00pm ET at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Canada. The game is broadcasted on NHL Network and TVAS.

Carolina Still Leads The Metropolitan Division

Now, the Carolina Hurricanes still lead the Metropolitan Division, but have lost a huge cog in their team. Andrei Svechnikov suffered a significant knee injury and the rest of his season is very much in doubt. Losing someone who can score 40+ goals for a playoff run is huge.

With Svechnikov undergoing ACL repair surgery, the Hurricanes try to replace his lost production in the lineup anyway they can. Now, two of the top face-off teams go against one another. Carolina also allows the least shots per game in the NHL (25.7) and the second-fewest goals per game (2.52). Their discipline is top-notch with an 84% penalty kill while averaging only 7.9 penalty minutes taken per contest.

Carolina still possesses ten players with ten or more goals led by Sebastian Aho and his 27 goals in 59 games. Martin Necas leads the Hurricanes with 27 goals and 61 points in 66 games. Goaltending is a little bit of an issue, but with so few shots faced, Frederik Andersen, Antti Raanta, and Piotr Kochetkov simply have to stop shots at slightly above league average to win games.

One concern is goal scoring and goaltending come the playoffs. However, that is not a worry right now. The priority for Carolina remains to stay the course and find scoring to complement their defense. Currently, the 2023 Vezina top-ten candidate has long-shot odds but Frederik Andersen may get the nod against his former team on Friday.

Toronto Wants Home Ice For Round 1

The Toronto Maple Leafs have a slight edge on Tampa Bay for home ice in Round 1 of the NHL Playoffs. Now, it is their goal to keep things that way.

Aside from Ryan O’Reilly being out of action, Toronto has a fully healthy Auston Matthews. It may be a matter of time before he starts scoring goals like most experts and fans are used to.

The Maple Leafs are solid in their own end themselves, allowing 2.67 goals per game and 28,9 shots per night which rank fifth and sixth overall.

Even better for Toronto, their power-play still clicks at 25.2 % (third) and the Leafs average 3.39 goals per game (8th in the NHL). What may be scary is the Maple Leafs, like the Hurricanes, are capable of even more offense.

This team creates chances driven by their transitional offense, which has more star power than the Hurricanes too.

The game carries the potential of being a “Darryl Sutter” classic or a 3-2 type of contest. Both teams want to show their might, but know playing a little defensive may tip the scales.

Expect Toronto and Carolina to play like this is a playoff game. With playoff intensity comes lower scoring and tighter checking. However, there will be quite a few scoring chances in what should be an entertaining affair.

Pick: Under 6.0 goals (EVEN)
