After a terrible start to last season basically buried them before Christmas, the Islanders are right in the mix a month into this new campaign. They are coming off a thrilling come-from-behind 4-3 overtime victory over the Flames and have won six of their last seven. That stretch started with a 3-0 shutout over the Rangers.

New York Islanders Betting Analysis

After a season to forget, the Islanders are looking more like the team that went to the Eastern Conference Finals a few years ago. Balanced scoring is once again key to the Isles attack as they currently boast nine different players who have scored at least three goals just 13 games into the season.

Their number one center, Mathew Barzal is not one of those players. In fact, Barzal hasn’t even scored yet this year, but has 14 assists and is tied for the team lead in points.

Prior to the season, the Islanders were sitting on the outside looking in at the Eastern Conference Playoff odds. They’re trying to put last year’s campaign in the rearview and prove the naysayers wrong and are doing a good job of that so far, going 9-4 against the spread in the early going.

New York Rangers Betting Analysis

It’s been a streaky start to the season for the New York Rangers, one of the trendy picks by many analysts in the Stanley Cup odds. The Blueshirts have a record of 6-4-3 and have won only three of eight home games so far this year.

Gerard Gallant’s side has lost two in a row, dropping games to the Red Wings and Bruins where they were home favorites in both. Vezina Trophy odds favorite, Igor Shesterkin, is expected to be in goal for the Rangers in this one after Jaroslav Halak was in net for the first meeting against the Islanders.

You have to wonder whether or not Gallant intentionally kept Shesterkin out of the crease for that first meeting. Why would he do that? Well, Shesterkin actually has a terrible record against the cross city rivals, going just 1-6-1 against the Islanders so far in his career.

03/17/2022 NYR 1 – NYI 2 NYI NYI Under
11/24/2021 NYI 1 – NYR 4 NYR NYR Under

For his career, Shesterkin has a 3.03 goals against average and .889 save percentage against the Islanders, which are both much worse than his overall career stats. At some point, you have to wonder if the Isles are a team that may be in the Russian netminder’s head, especially considering they are one of the Rangers’ biggest rivals.

Islander vs Rangers Pick & Prediction

Not only has their goalie struggled against the Islanders, but the Rangers haven’t fared too well regardless of who has been in goal for them. In the last 10 meetings between the two teams, the Manhattan side has fallen in seven of them.

Another trend that’s been obvious in recent meetings between these two squads is that they are usually tight-checking contests. Three of the past 10 meetings between the teams have included a shutout and eight of those games have gone under the total.

Most times the Islanders and Rangers have faced off against each other, the over/under total has been set at 5.5 goals, but in the Tuesday NHL odds, the total is set at an even 6 goals.

On top of all that, the Rangers are providing the third-best return on investment of any team in the league at 27.08% when you pick them to go under the total this year. Picking the winner in a rivalry game can be a coin flip sometimes, but one of the best bets when these two teams meet is to pick the under and that’s the prediction here.

Pick: Under 6 Goals (-105)
