Nobody expected the Kings to put up much of a fight in their 1st Round series versus the juggernaut Avalanche. Turns out, everybody was right. Colorado is over the verge of sweeping LA this afternoon, and online sportsbooks like their chances. They’ve pegged the Avs as heavy favorites in the NHL odds, and I can’t help but agree.

The biggest issue plaguing the Kings is their lack of goalscoring, and given the quality of play in between the Colorado pipes, I believe LA will be hard pressed to muster much offense today.

Puck drop for Game 4 of this Western Conference series is scheduled for 1:30 pm PT, 4:30 pm ET from the crypto.com Arena, in Los Angeles, CA. TNT, truTV and HBO Max will handle broadcast duties across America, while Sportsnet will carry the game for Canadian viewers.

My favorite bet in this matchup is under 2.5 goals for the Kings. That wager will tie in with my second favorite bet, Avs -1.5, but we’ll break down that later.

The LA offense was anemic during the regular season, finishing bottom-10 in goals for, and nothing has changed during the playoffs. The Kings enter play today having generated just 8.28 goals across all strengths, which is the second fewest among all clubs in the NHL Playoff Bracket. LA has produced only 74 scoring chances, which ranks fourth worst, and just 32 high danger opportunities which is the fifth lowest mark.

5 on 5 play has been a major concern as they’ve generated only 2.44 expected goals for over the last six periods. You’d be hard pressed to beat one of the league’s bottom-feeders with that lack of production, and there’s no chance to compete with Colorado, the Stanley Cup odds favorite, playing like that.

To make matters worse for the Kings, Avs goalie Scott Wedgewood is playing out of his mind right now. In three starts he’s yielded only 4 goals on 72 shots, good for a 1.28 GAA and .947 save percentage. Those stats are better than 15 of the other 18 playoff goalies so far, with Alex Lyon and Frederik Andersen being the lone exceptions.

The best place to bet under 2.5 goals for LA as of early Sunday afternoon is over at DraftKings. DK has the lowest odds on the prop at -120, while they also have the best price on over 5.5 goals if you like that side of the total.

Through three games, Colorado has only outscored LA 8-4, but there are reasons to believe that gap will be much wider after Game 4. The Avs have actually underperformed their expected goals total by 3.24 goals, and are dominating the play at even strength by possessing the puck for 55% of the play. They’ve generated 12 more high danger chances during 5 on 5 play, and some of their top scorers have yet to make an impact.

Nathan MacKinnon, who led the NHL in goals during the regular season, has yet to light the lamp in the postseason. Same goes for Martin Necas and Nazem Kadri, while Norris Trophy odds contender Cale Makar has scored just once. Expect some positive regression for the Avs big guns helping them beat LA by 2+ goals this afternoon.
