  • Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has avoided politics, but now has +2500 odds to become Elizabeth Warren’s Vice President
  • Johnson, previously a registered Republican, currently has no political affiliation
  • He once mused about entering politics but has subsequently stated he has no intention of running for office in 2020

Elizabeth Warren has been gaining steady momentum in the run-up to next year’s US presidential election. The senior United States Senator from Massachusetts has been drawing massing crowds at recent rallies, vaulting her to the top of the odds to claim the Democratic Party’s nomination, overtaking Joe Biden as the outright favorite.

Warren’s breakthrough has sparked speculation as to whom she may select as her running mate, and possibly America’s next vice president. Film star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has emerged as an intriguing +2500 wager to join the Warren ticket in political props.

Johnson Has Avoided Politics during Rise to Superstardom

While Warren had been politically active long before first being elected to the US Senate in 2012, Johnson largely eschewed politics during his rise to prominence, first as a professional wrestler and arguably the biggest superstar in the history of the WWE, and more recently as one of the most popular and highest-paid actors in Hollywood.

Johnson attended both the Democratic and Republican conventions in 2000 as “The Rock”, taking part in a non-partisan initiative by the WWE to encourage young people to vote. But he has traditionally avoided engaging in political debate while remaining coy about his own political views.

Rise of Trump Fueled Speculation in Johnson’s Political Future

Now older, wiser, and more confident in his own public persona, Johnson has been somewhat vocal about his political ambitions in recent years. A Washington Post op-ed in early 2016 presented Johnson, who at one time was a registered Republican, as a potential and more likeable alternative to Donald Trump.

Johnson fueled hopes by musing in a GQ feature article that a run for the White House was “a real possibility”.

A year later, Johnson fueled hopes by musing in a GQ feature article that a run for the White House was “a real possibility”. Preoccupied with a hectic schedule that has included six films over the past two years, the 45-year-old subsequently dismissed the notion of a 2020 presidential run.

“There’s a lot of ground to cover, and due to my schedule, it’s not possible in 2020,” said Johnson when quizzed on his political future at the premiere of last summer’s action movie Skyscraper.

Indeed, Johnson remains busy with the promotion of his current film Hobbs & Shaw, and also has two other movies in post-production including a Jumanji sequel. However, his attempts to downplay his political ambitions have failed to chill interest among a massive fan base that would be delighted to see him throw his hat in the political ring.

While both he and Trump have leveraged reality television to boost their personal brands, Johnson’s amiable personality sets him apart from the billionaire president, whose outrageous rhetoric has contributed to the widening political division in America.

Johnson’s Star Power a Potential Asset to Warren

The huge question remains whether Johnson’s personal political views and philosophy are a good fit for a maverick like Warren, who seeks to shake up the political establishment and has been supportive of policies that would take the country on a sharp turn to the left.

But as many politicians have previously discovered, political ideals must often be sacrificed on the altar of electability. And the addition of the massively popular Johnson to the ticket would likely pay huge dividends for Warren, who still faces an uphill battle in her bid to rehabilitate her image in the eyes of swing voters.
