  •  Sterling of Manchester City is joint-leader in early running
  • Pukki of  Norwich City also enjoys prolific start
  • Aguero hits four but two-goal Kane remains leading contender

Two strikers from minor clubs have muscled their way into the early goal-scoring race in England’s Premier League with Burnley’s Ashley Barnes and Teemu Pukki of Norwich currently among the pace-setters.

It is highly unlikely to stay that way, but the odds on Barnes of Burnley winning the Golden Boot award have been slashed by more than half after he hit the target four times in the team’s opening three games.

He is now +7000 to lift the award – a shift from the +15000 at which he was priced on August 12 after the opening match.

EPL 2019-20 Golden Boot Winner Odds

Player Odds
Harry Kane +400
Sergio Aguero +450
Mohammed Salah +500
Raheem Sterling +500
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang +1000
Sadio Mane +1400
Marcus Rashford +2000
Teemu Pukki +2000
Jamie Vardy +2500
Anthony Martial +330

Odds taken at 2019/08/30.

Pukki of Norwich is the EPL’s current joint-leading marksman with five goals. He is priced at +2000.

Raheem Sterling of Manchester City has also scored five times and he presently looks like most rewarding value price at +500 in the EPL Golden Boot Odds.

Title Chasing Strikers on Target

Sterling’s City teammate Sergio Aguero has also enjoyed a fruitful start to the season and is priced at +450 after scoring four times.

But he may find himself rotated out of the team on occasion this season – more often than Sterling will be – which will affect his chances of winning the Boot for a second time.

Harry Kane is favorite to win the Boot at +400 and has scored twice despite Tottenham’s stuttering start. Liverpool’s Mo Salah has three goals and is joint-third favorite at +500.

The 29-year-old Barnes scored in all three of Burnley’s opening fixtures. He got two goals in the 3-0 opening day defeat of Southampton. He then hit the target in a 2-1 defeat by Arsenal and also scored in the 1-1 draw with Wolves.

He scored 12 EPL goals in 37 appearances last season – 10 fewer than joint Golden Boot winners Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Relegation Fights Ahead

Burnley are tipped for a relegation struggle, as are Pukki’s newly-promoted Norwich. It will affect their numbers as the campaign rolls on.

Pukki hit a hat-trick in a 3-1 defeat of Newcastle United. He also scored in a 4-1 defeat by Liverpool and a 3-2 setback against Chelsea.

The Finn was on target 29 times in the Championship last season.

Notably, both Barnes and Pukki have already shown they can score against the big clubs this season. So they may continue to be prolific even if their teams struggle.

The most consistent goal-scorer outside of the elite clubs is Jamie Vardy of Leicester City.

He hit 18 goals last season and 20 the season before. He is priced at +2500 after scoring once so far.

Among the leading candidates, Aubameyang of Arsenal and Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford of Manchester United have each scored twice after thee games.

Pick: Raheem Sterling +500
