Napoli vs Lazio Preview

Napoli leads Serie A by a mammoth 18 points with 14 games still left to play, and already has one hand on the scudetto title. Only an implosion on a massive scale will stop that from happening and there’s no sign of it. Rather than seeing their form either plateau or drop off, Gli Azzurri appears to be getting stronger.

If, or when, Luciano Spalletti’s men get the job done it will be their first title since 1990 – when their team included the late, great Diego Maradona – and a run of eight Serie A wins on the spin heading into this game suggests it won’t be long before the trophy is handed over.

Scudetto Already in Sight for Napoli

Last weekend, they ended their away game in Empoli with ten men but still came away with an impressive 2-0 win thanks to goals from Ardian Ismajli and Victor Osimhen. It was Napoli’s 12th clean sheet in 24 games and they have only conceded 15 goals.

They are also flying in the Champions League where, in the first leg of their round-of-16 tie, they went away to Eintracht Frankfurt and came away with a 2-0 win. The next few months are set up to be historic ones for the Naples club.

Lazio in Hunt for Champions League Place

Maurizio Sarri’s team have put themselves in a great position to challenge for a place in next season’s Champions League, and their 1-0 win over bottom-of-the-table Sampdoria on Monday took them to fourth – just two points behind both Milan teams who are tied in second on 47 points.

While Lazio’s 13-6-5 record is reflective of a good overall season, on the road they have excelled from a defensive perspective – conceding just seven goals. Only Napoli has matched that impressive record and if they are looking for positives ahead of this game, there’s one right there.

A Mean Defense on the Road for Lazio

Sarri’s team’s productivity at the other end of the pitch has been hindered by Ciro Immobile having, by his very high standards, a mediocre season. For most strikers, nine goals from 19 Serie A games is a good return but such has been Immobile’s phenomenal record (and Lazio’s reliance on him), they need him back to his best to guarantee them a top-four finish.

When these two met back in September in Rome, the Neapolitans won 2-1 – goals from Kim and Kvaratskhelia – and we have to go back to December 2020 for the last Lazio win. In this equivalent fixture last season, Napoli won 4-0.

Napoli vs Lazio Prediction

While Lazio are in a good place, their task here is massive. Napoli are flying right now and beating all before them, and there is little to suggest this game will be any different.

An early goal for Lazio is about the only thing that could trigger an upset, but this Napoli team is full of goals right now. Even at -175, there is value here in the home win.

Napoli vs Lazio Pick: Napoli to win (-175)
