Pick 1: Southampton vs Manchester United
Southampton’s Monday night draw at Wolverhampton took them up to fifth in the EPL table, just three points behind leaders Tottenham, and capped an impressive start for the Saints, who have only lost twice.
A win over United could take them level at the top of the league; a far cry from just over one year ago when under the same manager, Ralf Hasenhüttl, they were beaten 9-0 at home by Leicester City! This Southampton side is a very different opponent and looks to have a genuine hope of a European place.
United have had an indifferent start to the campaign and currently sit tenth; a mix of impressive wins and disappointing defeats. In the Champions League, they pulled off an outstanding away win at PSG but two games earlier had suffered the ignominy of a crushing 6-1 home defeat by a rejuvenated Tottenham; a perfect snapshot of their season to date.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has struggled to find a formula for consistency and so finds himself under pressure after three defeats in their opening eight games – a record that United’s owners and fans alike are unfamiliar and uncomfortable with.
On that basis, a trip to the flying Saints is hardly ideal for United although they’ll be buoyed by a 4-1 win on Tuesday over Istanbul Basaksehir in the Champions League, and that may just be the boost they need to kick-start their domestic season.
Pick: United to win (-106)
Pick 2: Chelsea vs Tottenham
London derbies are, by their very nature, feisty and edgy affairs but the lack of crowds have impacted them massively since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. However, this weekend’s clash at Stamford Bridge, where top-of-the-table Tottenham meet third-placed Chelsea, promises to be a battle royal with the added sub-plot of Spurs manager Jose Mourinho returning to the scene of some of his former triumphs.

As manager of Chelsea, Mourinho – the self-titled ‘Special One’ – won three Premier League titles, and so on Sunday, he’ll be looking to lay down a marker in his bid to land Spurs their first league title since 1961. His men arrive in great shape after beating Manchester City 2-0 last weekend, and since losing at home to Everton on the opening day of the season they’ve won six and drawn two.
They also have the best defensive record in the league – nine conceded in nine games – which is not a quality normally associated with Spurs’ teams. It is however a Mourinho quality.
Chelsea’s 5-3-1 record is similar to Sunday’s visitors – just an extra draw in the place of Spurs win – but they are the EPL’s leading scorers with 22 goals, and come into this off the back of four straight wins. Frank Lampard, the Blues’ manager, has successfully integrated Timo Werner – his summer signing from RB Leipzig – into his attack and they now look full of goals.
So, a tough one to call but worth noting is that Chelsea’s midweek Champions League fixture was on Tuesday (a 2-1 away win in Rennes) while Spurs are in Europa League action on Thursday. The extra 48 hours rest could be all-important and so for that reason alone, I’m going for a narrow home win.
Pick: Chelsea to win (+107)
Pick 3: Everton vs Leeds United
Everton’s flying start has fizzled slightly and they’ve now dropped to sixth in the table after leading it over the early weeks of the season. Having won just two of their last six, Carlo Ancelotti’s men need to build on last Sunday’s win over lowly Fulham and will see a home game against newly-promoted opposition as an ideal opportunity to return to winning ways.
Leeds, meanwhile, have gone three games without a win and, like Everton, have stalled a little after a very bright start to the season. On Monday night, they drew 0-0 with Arsenal at Elland Road but were disappointed not to have won the game after the Gunners had been reduced to ten men early in the second half. For Leeds, it was two points dropped.
Overall, United’s problem has been conceding goals – they have the second-highest goals against record in the division – but manager Marcelo Bielsa has developed a playing style that’s easy on the eye, and they’ll go to Goodison Park looking for the win rather than setting up for a draw. There’s no value in the home win, which is odds-on, but there is in the draw; something that this spirited Leeds team are capable of earning.
Pick: Everton and Leeds to Draw (+280)
