Medvedev and Dimitrov will go head-to-head in the first of two matches happening on the day, and this will be the sixth time these two will have gone head-to-head in their careers.

It’s no surprise that the No. 1 seed Medvedev is the favorite heading into the match. The World No. 4 has yet to drop a set during the tournament this week.

Medvedev’s Perfect Through Three

Medvedev has cruised through the first three matches of the tournament, having yet to drop a set, and only losing 16 games. The 26-year took down Nikoloz Basilashvili, Dominic Thiem and most recently Jannik Sinner.

In his quarterfinal match against Sinner, he came out strong, but the beginning of the match had quite a bit of back and forth. But Medvedev was able to break his opponent and hold serve. He came out strong in the second, and managed to jump out to a 3-1 lead.

On route to his ninth semifinal of the season, he defeated Sinner 6-3, 6-2.

Dimitrov Defeats Giron to Move on

The Bulgarian has had a pretty impressive tournament so far, fending off Thiago Monteiro and Andrey Rublev to earn his spot in the quarterfinals. He then went up against Marcos Giron, and managed to take the first set fairly easily.

His quarterfinal opponent wasn’t going away quickly, and managed to pick up the second, forcing a decider by breaking Dimitrov’s serve.

But the third was all Dimitrov, and managed to beat Giron 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, to earn a spot in his third semifinal match of the year.

First Meeting of 2022

Despite being the first meeting of 2022, these two have played each other a total of five times before, dating back to 2017. The first meeting between Medvedev and Dimitrov was in London in 2017, where Dimitrov took the quarterfinal match. Their most recent match happened in Indian Wells last year during the round of 16, where Dimitrov won again.

But even thought Dimitrov has won their first and last meeting, Medvedev actually holds the head-to-head edge with a 3-2 record over the Bulgarian.

Medvedev did recently deal with injury, but he’s shown no signs of that playing into his form in Vienna this week. He’s been playing like he has in the past. And that usually means it can be dangerous for any of his opponents, as he’s one of the best on tours when playing his best tennis.

Yes, Dimitrov has had a strong tournament, but he doesn’t seem to be at the same level Medvedev is at, which is why Medvedev looks to be the one to move on.
