Anett Kontaveit’s Road to The Finals

In the first semi-final, No. 4 seed Kontaveit took care of business, upsetting the top-seeded Petra Martic in straight sets 6-2, 6-4.

It took a total of 79 minutes for the 24-year-old Estonian to book her spot into the finals.

It wasn’t the best day for Martic, as the 29-year-old Croatian struggled with her movement and hit only 14 winners. Kontaveit more than doubled her opponents’ winners, while also keeping her unforced errors to a minimum.

Kontaveit did not waste any time and broke Martic twice in the opening set.

Although Kontaveit eased through Martic, her previous two matches went the distance, with three setters against Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto and Germany’s Laura Siegemund.

Fiona Ferro’s Road to The Finals

In the second semifinal of the day, it was a battle of the unseeded playersm with Ferro pulling through a tough match against home favourite Camila Giorgi.

The Italian started firing with a 5-0 lead en route to winning the opening set. However Ferro rebounded and was triumphant, winning 2-6, 6-2, 7-5.

Prior to dropping that set, the 23-year-old Ferro surrendered only one the set throughout the tourney, against world No. 89 Giorgi.

Before entering the tournament, the Frenchwoman was 10-0 in exhibition play organized by the French Tennis Federation (FFT).

Best Bet

The youngsters will battle it out for the 31st Palermo Open ladies singles title.

Rising star Ferro has proven she’s mentally tough, overcoming Giorgi down the stretch in the final set. Born in Belgium, Ferro last met with Kontaveit in October 2016 on the indoor hard courts in Poitiers, France.

After a gruelling two hours and 10 minutes on court, Kontaveit was victorious 7-5, 6-7(6), 6-2.

Kontaveit’s last title win was on the grass courts in June 2017, while Ferro raised the trophy last year in Switzerland.

Although it won’t be smooth sailing for Kontaveit, the fact that she breezed through Martic in the semifinalsmay give her added energy for what shapes up to be a tough finals matchup for both players.

Having already beaten Ferro, Kontaveit knows she can complete the task and that should give her an extra boost of confidence.

The pick: Kontaveit (-167)
