Round of 16 action continues on Monday at the French Open, with four matchups on the men’s side. Both of the tournament’s top-two favorites, Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic, are already through to the quarters, and the number three contender Holger Rune has his sights set on joining them.

French Open Round of 16 Odds – June 5

Matchup Moneyline
Nicholas Jarry vs [4] Casper Ruud +155 / -190
[6] Holger Rune vs [23] Francisco Cerundolo -255 / +210
Tomas Etcheverry vs [27] Yoshihito Nishioka -320 / +260
[28] Grigor Dimitrov vs [22] Alexander Zverev +145 / -175

Rune currently boasts a +750 price tag in the French Open odds, and will square off against clay court specialist Francisco Cerundolo on Monday, laying -255 on the moneyline.

Alexander Zverev, who owns the fourth shortest odds to win the title, will also take the court, laying -175 on the moneyline to Grigor Dimitrov.

Holger Rune vs Francisco Cerundolo Picks

Rune should be the fresher of the two players having played only two matches so far. He earned a second round walkover win over Gael Monfils, and then breezed through his third round match in straight sets. He’s 16-3 so far this year on clay, winning a 250 series event and reaching the final in a pair of 1000 series tournaments.

Cerundolo on the other hand, is fresh off an upset victory of the ninth seed Taylor Fritz, which marked his third victory over a top-10 opponent during the clay court season. The Argentine has a 9-5 record on clay in 2023, and took his only meeting against Rune in straight sets back in 2019.

Rune was just a 16-year-old at the time, and has taken massive steps on his way to becoming a top-six player in the world. He’ll aim to punish his opponent with his relentless forehand, but don’t expect Cerundolo to roll over.

The 24-year-old is a crafty technician, and will figure out ways to extend points and prolong this match. Expect him to take this one to at least four sets.

Pick: Francisco Cerundolo +5.5 Games (-125)

Nicolas Jarry vs Casper Ruud Picks

Casper Ruud, the highest seed in action on Monday, will square off with Nicolas Jarry. Both men have dropped only two sets all tournament, with Jarry entering play in better lead-up form.

The 27-year-old won last week in Geneva, ousting Ruud in hard fought quarter-finals victory. He went on to take out both Zverev and Dimitrov en route to the title, and his big serve and baseline power should give Ruud problems once again.

Prior to this week, Ruud had lost in his first or second match in four of his past five clay court tournaments, and is a notoriously slow starter. Expect Jarry to give the Norwegian all he can handle, and don’t be surprised if he sends him home early once again.

Picks: Over 38.5 (-130), Nicolas Jarry +3.5 Games (-115)

Grigor Dimitrov vs Alexander Zverev Picks

The fact that Zverev is the 22nd seed, yet boasts the fourth shortest odds to win the tournament, tells you just how high oddsmakers are on him.

He’s dropped only one set all tournament, and is fresh off as semi-final run in Geneva. He’s rounding back into form after a devastating ankle injury that plagued him last year, and is 3-1 all-time against Dimitrov, winning their only matchup on clay in straight sets.

Dimitrov vs Zverev H2H Results

Tournament Result
2021 ATP Masters 1000 Paris Zverev – 7-6, 6-7, 6-3
2016 ATP Masters 1000 Rome Zverev – 6-1, 6-4
2016 ATP Masters 1000 Indian Wells Zverev – 6-4, 3-6, 7-5
2014 Basel Switzerland Dimitrov – 2-6, 6-4, 6-2

Dimitrov hasn’t dropped a set through three matches, but has yet to face a high level opponent. Since late February he’s beaten only one top-40 player, and he’ll likely struggle to break through against Zverev’s top level defense.

Zverev has made the semi-finals at Roland Garros in back-to-back years, and is seeking a fifth trip to the quarter-finals since 2017. Expect him to punch his ticket on Monday.

Pick: Alexander Zverev -2.5 Games (-125)
