  • Canada’s Leylah Fernandez is a solid -230 favorite over Italy’s Martina Trevisan in their WTA French Open quarterfinal match on Tuesday, May 31
  • It’s the first meeting ever between these two players
  • All of the Trevisan vs Fernandez odds, picks, predcitions and best bets are analyzed in the story below

When it comes to the French Open quarterfinals, Martina Trevisan owns a significant edge over Leylah Fernandez. She’s been there and done that.

Trevisan previously reached the final eight in women’s singles at Roland Garros in 2020. She’ll become the third Italian woman to play in multiple French Open quarterfinals when she clashes with Fernandez.

Even though this is the furthest that Fernandez has advanced in the tournament, oddsmakers are unfazed by this factor. They’re setting the Canadian as a solid -230 favorite over Trevisan. Fernandez reached the finals of last year’s US Open, so playing this deep into a Grand Slam event isn’t that foreign to her.

The match is set to get underway at 6:00 am ET on Tuesday, May 31. Viewing is available on the Tennis Channel, or via streaming on fuboTV. In Canada, the action can be caught on TSN, TSN.ca, or via the TSN app.

In the French Open betting trends, Fernandez, the #17 seed, was set at +5000 odds to win in the tournament’s opening betting lines. The current French Open odds, show that bettors will get +1000 odds if they opt for a futures play on Fernandez.

Fernandez Overcomes Anisimova

Fernandez’s service game was on point in her 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 victory over American Anisimova. In the first set, the Canadian was able to land 73% of her first serves. She increased that number of 80% in the second set and 86% in the third set.

Playfully given the nickname “Clay-lah” at Roland Garros, world #18 Fernandez ended up working three sets to win each of her last two matches. She’s played 61 games over that span. In her run to the 2021 US Open final, four of Fernandez’s six matches went the full three sets. However, her resiliency and determination so often sees her through in hard-fought, close matches.

To show how close the match with Anisimova was, the points won edge was a narrow 91-87 for Fernandez. She committed four double faults but also won six of 10 break points.

Fernandez is the first Canadian woman to make the Roland Garros quarterfinals since Eugenie Bouchard in 2014.

Trevisan Facing First Seeded Opponent

Trevisan previously reached the French Open quarterfinals in 2020 as a qualifier. The world #59 – her highest ranking ever on the WTA Tour – Trevisan won her first career title this season and is on a nine-match winning streak, eight of those victories coming in straight sets.

The Italian has managed to reach the quarterfinals without dealing with a single seeded player. In the round of 16 against Aliaksandra Sashnovich, Trevisan was a 7-6(12-10), 7-5 winner.

Even though she’s 28 and turned pro when Fernandez was five years old, Trevisan is playing in just her eighth Grand Slam event. Fernandez, 19, is playing her ninth Grand Slam tournament.

Trevisan vs Fernandez Prediction

In this unusual battle of left-handers, Fernandez appears to be finding that Grand Slam magic once more. She has already toppled two impressive opponents in Anisimova and 2022 Olympic champion Belinda Bencic.

The Canadian has generated 23 break points over her last two matches. She’s 6-3 on clay this year.

Trevisan readily admits she’s much more comfortable playing on a hard-court surface. Yet tennis insiders are taking note that her style of play at Roland Garros is much more aggressive than in previous years. Last week, Trevisan took the title in a warm-up tournament in Morocco, beating Garbine Muguruza en route to the win.

Still, Fernandez’s bag of shotmaking tricks, especially her powerful forehand, are serving her well in the French Open. It should prove to be too much for Trevisan to handle.

Pick: Fernandez -230; Fernandez 2-1 (+320)
