Spain’s Daniel Merida will battle American Learner Tien in the quarterfinal at ATP Montreal, with a trip to the semifinals and a match with the winner of Jakub Menisk and Ben Shelton.
Tien enters the match as the higher-ranked chalk and the betting favorite. Conversely, Merida finds himself playing the familiar underdog role, looking to pull off a lucrative upset and punch his ticket to the semifinals.
This one goes Tuesday night at 76:30pm ET from Center Court at IGA Stadium in Montreal, with the Tennis Channel providing the broadcast coverage in the US, and Sportsnet carrying the matches in Canada.
In my breakdown of this quarterfinal showdown, I will dive into the overall matchup and deliver my expert predictions to help you find wagerable value at the sportsbook before the opening serve.
Merida vs Tien Predictions
- Pick: Tien Moneyline (-194 at Kalshi)
The Elo numbers reinforce that position. Tien is ranked No. 21 on the ATP Elo leaderboard at 1,896.7, while Merida sits No. 48 at 1,798.1. That roughly 99-point gap implies Tien should be in the mid-60% win-probability range in a best-of-three match, which lines up well with the Kalshi price. The edge becomes even more meaningful on this surface: Tien owns a No. 15 hard-court Elo at 1,868.0 compared to Merida’s No. 76 hard-court Elo at 1,702.8, a separation of more than 160 points.
Currently sitting at No. 19 in the ATP Singles Rankings with 2,155 points, the American has established himself as a top-tier threat on the tour. His recent Montreal path backs that up, as he has beaten Gael Monfils, Tommy Paul and Thiago Agustin Tirante while dropping just one set. His 52-week profile also gives him the cleaner favorite’s case: Tien leads Merida in aces per game, first-serve points won, second-serve points won, service games won, tiebreak win rate, dominance ratio and match efficiency. Merida’s return numbers are dangerous, but Tien’s superior serve-and-pressure metrics make him a dependable pick to win this quarterfinal clash outright.
Merida vs Tien Best Bets
- Pick: Merida +2.5 Games (+100 at bet365)
Even though Tien is the right side on the moneyline, laying the games with the favorite might be a step too far given Daniel Merida’s recent surge. While his overall ATP ranking sits at No. 63, a closer look at the 2026 ATP Singles Race Rankings reveals a player performing at a much higher level in the current calendar year.
Merida has rocketed up 12 spots in the year-to-date standings, reaching No. 34 with 1,027 points. This rapid ascent in the Race rankings indicates that the Spaniard is playing some of the best tennis of his career and stringing together strong results week after week. Taking the underdog with a +2.5 game cushion at even money is an appealing play on my card. Merida possesses the current form, reliable break-point conversion rates, and momentum to keep this matchup highly competitive, even if he ultimately falls short of the outright upset.
