  • Last time they played, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal met in the final of the 2019 Australian Open
  • John Isner won the 2018 Miami Masters

Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal are the top two seeds heading into the 2019 Miami Open. Both have been off since facing each other in the final of the Australian Open and now online betting sites have posted odds on if they’ll meet in the final of the Miami Masters.

Will Djokovic & Nadal Meet in the 2019 Miami Masters Final? Odds
Yes +300

Odds taken on 02/25/19.

Djokovic Has Been Unstoppable Lately

Djokovic has now won three straight Grand Slams, including Wimbledon, the US Open and now the Australian Open. Since the start of Wimbledon, Djokovic is 45-5 in his last 50 matches. Four of his five losses have come on the indoor hard courts, which isn’t a concern here.

Djokovic has performed well here in the past as he’s won five of the last eight Miami Opens. Remember that he struggled for a good year and a half before finding his stroke in the spring last year and that came after the Miami tournament. He lost in his first match in Miami last year, falling 6-3, 6-5 to Benoit Paire.

Nadal is in Great Form

While Djokovic has received a lot of credit for his form, Nadal would be the man in the spotlight had Djokovic not been one-upping him over the last year. Nadal has faced Djokovic in the semi-final or beyond in two of his last four tournaments, coming up short both times.

The challenge with Nadal is that hard courts are not his best surface. He was 38-8 on hard courts in 2017 and 14-2 in 2018, but the red clay is where he’s unstoppable.

Nadal was 38-8 on hard courts in 2017 and 14-2 in 2018.

He’s won 41 of his last 43 on clay. Nadal did get to the final of the 2019 Aussie Open, but that was his just his second final on a hard court tournament in his last six appearances.

Don’t Count on Nadal

There’s no question that Djokovic and Nadal are both playing well, but +300 is not enough value for me to risk it. We’ll probably see Djokovic in the final but I’m much more skeptical about Nadal. He’s fallen short of the final at the Miami Open in five of the last seven seasons and I’ll bank on it happening again.
