  • The Atlanta Dream are heavy 8.5-point favorites over the LA Sparks in WNBA action Monday
  • Atlanta has reeled off six straight wins against LA, four of those by double digits
  • Read below for my Sparks vs Dream picks, predictions and updated odds

The Atlanta Dream are sliding down the WNBA standings, with just one win in their last seven games.

The schedule makers might have sent them a lifeline Monday, as they host the LA Sparks.

LA might have won two straight coming in, but they have had their troubles with Atlanta, having dropped six in a row in this head-to-head, and eight of the last 10 — a big reason they find themselves as 8.5-point road underdogs.

Atlanta might get that much needed win, but I don’t know if they’re 8.5-point favorites over anyone right now.

Action gets underway at 7pm ET from the Gateway Center in College Park, GA, with USA Net providing the broadcast coverage.

The Dream are not to be taken lightly, as evidenced by their 4th-best ranking in the most recent WNBA Championship odds — but they are far from a team that looks like they’re ready to compete for a title.

Since a June 22 win against Toronto that put them at a season-best 12-4 record, it’s been all downhill for the Dream. Their 102-92 loss to Portland is now their sixth loss in seven games, and they’ve fallen to sixth seed in the WNBA playoff picture.

There isn’t one faucet that needs to be shut down or switch to be flicked: generally the Dream are struggling to put together a solid 40 minutes of basketball.

During this slide, the offense has dried up, ranking dead last in field goal shooting (39.8%) and 3-point shooting (24.6%).

But the defense has been getting shredded at the same time. Atlanta is letting teams shoot an incredible 50.7% from the field and a dead-eye 41.5% clip from 3-point range.

The result is a team that has failed to cover the spread in eight straight games — all as the betting favorite.

LA has worked its way to within one game of .500, and sit just outside the Top 8 for a playoff berth, and they can challenge with an offense that ranks sixth in the WNBA in scoring at 89 points per game.

They’ve really flexed their offensive chops the last two games, averaging 104 points on 51% shooting (including 45.1% from 3-point range).

I like the Dream to get a much-needed W, but the Sparks are too explosive right now to get that many points.

The main thing holding the Sparks back from being holding playoff positioning is the fact that they can’t stop anyone. LA allows the most points per game in the WNBA at 93.2 per contest, with teams shooting 47.5% against them, which sits 14th out of 15.

While that doesn’t make for team greatness, bettors should take note because the Over is always in play. Not including their game against Toronto (where all betting lines were off), the Over has gone 7-2-0 for the Sparks in the last 10 games.

Atlanta should be able to find some offensive rhythm against the league’s worst defense, and they should be able to put up points. Over the last 10 meetings, the Dream have won eight, and have scored at least 86 points in seven of those.

The Over has cashed in two of the last three head-to-head meetings.
