When Zinedine Zidane’s team bowed meekly out of the Champions League this week in a 2-0 loss to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, all thoughts immediately turned to Sunday’s 3pm ET kickoff at home against Sevilla.

With Los Blancos just three points back of leader Atletico Madrid and with a game in hand after ATM’s 0-0 draw with Barcelona on Saturday, Zidane will have to ensure his team finds the right response to its midweek disappointment and stays in the hunt for the only piece of silverware now available to it this season.

But Sevilla’s own championship hopes are far from dead and buried yet, with the team sitting in fourth, four points back of third-placed Real Madrid and seven off the summit with four games to play. It promises to be a hard-fought encounter.

Disappointment in Madrid

While there’s no shame in losing a Champions League final, it was more the manner of Madrid’s performance in the second leg of its ultimate elimination against Chelsea that had tongues wagging in the Spanish capital. Despite the return of combative captain Sergio Ramos for the game, Real never really got out of first gear as Chelsea ran the show from first kick to last.

So it will be a test of Zidane’s managerial acumen to rally his troops for another big test within the same week. Not that they should need much motivation for this kind of game. As defending champions, these Real Madrid players know how to get across the finish line, and with just four games left to go, the 2020-21 La Liga crown is very much up for grabs.

Walking Wounded

Although Real is unbeaten in the league since the end of January, and has won its last four meetings with Sevilla, it could see that record threatened here given the lengthy injury list facing the defending champions.

Lucas Vazquez, Dani Carvajal, Raphael Varane, Ferland Mendy and Ramos are all missing, while Federico Valverde and Vinicius Junior both missed training late this week, so might be limited here.  On top of that, there could be fallout from the furor that occurred when Eden Hazard was seen smiling and laughing with his former Chelsea teammates after the Champions League defeat.

Sevilla’s Surge

For much of the past month and a half, no team in La Liga was hotter than Sevilla, which won seven of eight to claw its way back into the title race. Unfortunately for manager Julen Lopetegui, that momentum came to a juddering halt last weekend, when Sevilla lost 1-0 against Athletic Bilbao, bringing its eight-game unbeaten run to an end.

So it will fall on Lopetegui to pick his players up for this test, and he will benefit from having an almost fully fit squad available to him for Sunday’s match. However, that may not be enough to go against the tide of history – Sevilla hasn’t won away at Real Madrid since 2008.

A One-Sided Rivalry

Games between the two sides have very often gone Madrid’s way. In 36 head-to-head battles, Los Blancos have won 24, lost 11 and drawn just one.

And Real Madrid has been largely sensational at home this season. In a novel twist, it has been playing at the smaller Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium while the Bernabeu has been undergoing extensive renovations. Real has lost just three games at home in the league, winning 12 and drawing two, conceding just 10 goals in those games, the second-best home defensive record in La Liga.

However, Sevilla has managed to win 10 games on their travels in La Liga this season, joint with Real and Atletico as the second-best away record behind Barcelona’s league-leading 12.
