The Tampa Bay Lightning (38-18-4, 19-8-4 away) visit Scotiabank Arena as heavy road favorites against the Toronto Maple Leafs (27-25-11, 16-10-7 home) on Saturday night. Tampa has lost four straight but still leads the Atlantic Division. Toronto’s six-game skid has all but buried its NHL playoff chances.
The Leafs went full sell mode at the deadline, shipping out McMann, Laughton and Roy for draft picks. Tampa brought back Corey Perry from the Kings for a playoff push.
Puck drop is set for 7 pm ET on Sportsnet Ontario and NHL Network. Here are my Lightning vs Maple Leafs prediction, prop picks and odds.
Lightning vs Maple Leafs Prediction
- Lightning -1.5 (+120 at DraftKings)
I’m taking Tampa on the puck line for my Lightning vs Maple Leafs prediction. Yes, the Lightning have lost four in a row, but this is a team that went 20-1-1 from December 20 through February 25. They’ve had three cold stretches this season, and none lasted more than a handful of games.
Toronto allows the most shots per game of any team in the NHL (31.94) and has surrendered 4.50 goals per game during the six-game losing streak. They’ve lost seven straight at home, and the three players they traded this week (McMann, Laughton, Roy) combined for 32 goals this season.
The Lightning have also been slow starters during this skid, giving up eight first-period goals across four games. But Toronto isn’t the team to exploit that. The Leafs rank 29th in goals against (3.46 per game) and their 31.94 shots allowed per game is dead last. Tampa should have no trouble generating looks against this defense.
Lightning vs Maple Leafs Key Stats
Tampa’s scoring efficiency ratio (1.294) ranks second in the NHL, and they beat Toronto 4-2 in the first game after the break just 10 days ago. The Lightning are 6-1 in their last seven against Atlantic Division opponents.
They’re also 22-8 in their last 30 on one day’s rest, a trend that matters tonight. At +115, the puck line is worth the risk against a team in complete freefall.
Lightning vs Maple Leafs Prop Picks
- Nikita Kucherov Over 1.5 Points (+100 at BetMGM)
Kucherov has 32 goals and 64 assists on the season and is tied for the most points against Toronto by any skater since 2023-24 (18 points). He had a goal and two assists when these teams met on February 25, and he leads all players with 12 assists vs the Leafs over the last three seasons.
Kuch has been quiet during this four-game slide with just one goal, but Toronto gives up the most shots in the league and ranks 29th in goals against. This is the matchup for Kucherov to break out of the mini-slump.
- Auston Matthews Over 3.5 Shots on Goal (-105 at BetMGM)
Matthews hasn’t scored in 10 games, but he’s been firing at the net to try and end the drought. He’s cleared 3.5 shots in three straight, averaging 5.3 per game during that stretch. Matthews also has a six-game point streak against Tampa (three goals, seven assists), so the volume and the matchup history are both working in his favor.
Even if the goal doesn’t come, Matthews should generate enough chances to clear this number comfortably.
Lightning vs Maple Leafs Odds
Odds as of March 7 via consensus sportsbooks. Canadian bettors can claim the Bet99 promo code and grab a bonus for tonight’s NHL odds.
The Lightning vs Maple Leafs odds have Tampa Bay as a sizeable -180 to -210 road favorite with Toronto around +150 to +175. The puck line is Lightning -1.5 (+115) and Maple Leafs +1.5 (-135). The total sits at 6.5, with the over at +100 and under at -120.
Tampa’s moneyline carries roughly a 64-68% implied probability depending on the book. That’s a steep price for a team on a four-game skid, but it tells you how badly the market views Toronto right now. The Leafs haven’t won at home since February 3.
Lightning vs Maple Leafs H2H History
Toronto has been one of Tampa’s toughest opponents over the past four seasons, posting a 9-3-1 record (.731 points percentage) since 2022-23. That’s the second-best mark by any team against the Lightning in that span. But the over has been the real story in this series.
Lightning vs Maple Leafs Recent Meetings
The over has cashed in 20 of the last 29 meetings between these clubs, and the home team has won five of the last seven. These games consistently produce goals because both power plays can capitalize, and neither team shies away from trading chances at even strength.
Vasilevskiy gets the start for Tampa with a 28-10-2 record and 2.28 GAA, though he’s allowed 12 goals over his last three starts. Anthony Stolarz is expected between the pipes for Toronto with a 7-8-2 record and 3.37 GAA. Brayden Point has three goals in four career games against Stolarz, while Toronto’s Matthew Knies has five goals in six games against Vasilevskiy.
