The ATP Montreal Men singles final pits two of America’s brightest talents, Ben Shelton and Brandon Nakashima, against each other for the hardware.
Shelton enters as the decisive favorite, currently ranked World No. 10, while the talented +164 underdog Nakashima sits at No. 31 in the ATP rankings.
But perhaps the biggest number heading into the this finale is 5-0 — Shelton’s career record against Nakashima.
This one goes Thursday night at 8pm ET from Center Court at IGA Stadium in Montreal, with the Tennis Channel providing the broadcast coverage in the US, and Sportsnet carrying the matches in Canada.
Read below as I break down the matchup, providing a prediction, expert picks and updated odds.
Shelton vs Nakashima Prediction and Expert Picks
- Pick: Shelton ML (66¢ / -152 at Kalshi)
The core thesis for backing Shelton rests not only on his superior ranking profile but his repeated success in this exact matchup. Including their Houston quarterfinal on clay in April 2024, Shelton is 5-0 head-to-head against Nakashima, adding a 7-5, 7-6 win to the four meetings already listed above. That matters because the matchup has now translated across surfaces and match contexts, not merely one favorable hardcourt sample.
The current Elo board also supports Shelton as the rightful favorite. Shelton sits No. 12 by overall Elo at 1936.3, compared with Nakashima at No. 30 and 1857.1. His hard-court Elo edge is even more relevant for Montreal: Shelton ranks No. 10 in hElo at 1907.3, while Nakashima ranks No. 29 at 1814.0. That roughly 93-point hard-court Elo gap lines up with Shelton being a clear favorite before even accounting for the 5-0 H2H advantage.
The 52-week key stats reinforce why Shelton is better equipped to convert close sets. Both players average 0.73 aces per game, but Shelton’s second serve is the separator: he wins 57.3% of second-serve points compared with Nakashima’s 49.8%. Shelton also holds serve more often (90.1% service games won vs. 85.8%) and saves break points at a much higher clip (71.1% vs. 63.0%). In a matchup likely decided by a handful of pressure points, Shelton’s 61.0% tiebreak win rate versus Nakashima’s 42.9% is another major edge.
H2H History: Nakashima vs Shelton
- Pick: Over 23.5 Total Games (-111 at bet365)
While I am confident in Shelton to triumph, the Over 23.5 games line offers excellent value at -111 because Nakashima’s profile still points toward competitive, serve-heavy sets. His 52-week numbers show the return-game competence needed to avoid getting run off the court: Nakashima creates more break points per game than Shelton (0.48 vs. 0.39), wins more return games (18.7% vs. 14.0%), and owns a higher raw dominance ratio (1.233 vs. 1.126). Those figures help explain why he can keep scoreboard pressure on Shelton even if the matchup has repeatedly tilted Shelton’s way.
The catch is that Shelton has been far more efficient in the most important moments. His dominance efficiency (1.243 vs. 1.059), match efficiency (1.731 vs. 1.250), service hold rate, break-point save rate, and tiebreak record all point to him winning the leverage points Nakashima needs to steal. That is ideal for a Shelton moneyline/Over pairing: Nakashima has enough return and rally quality to stretch sets, while Shelton has the better clutch profile to finish them.
Their previous meetings fit that script. The Australian Open match reached 37 games despite ending in straight sets, and the recent Toronto meeting went three sets with multiple tight scorelines. Add in the missing Houston result — Shelton 7-5, 7-6 — and the rivalry consistently trends toward narrow sets rather than quick blowouts. In a final setting, where both players fight fiercely for every point, one tiebreak plus one extended set can put the Over 23.5 firmly in play.
