  • The Michigan Wolverines are better than a 4-TD favorite over the Western Michigan Broncos in Week 1
  • Michigan should be able to control the trenches and lean on its rushing attack.

It’s a major mismatch to start the 2026 season for the 16th-ranked Michigan Wolverines, who open against the Western Michigan Broncos in Week 1.

Michigan enters as a massive 28.5point home favorite in the College Football odds for this in-state non-conference matchup, while Western Michigan comes in with confidence after closing last season on a six-game winning streak.

The Broncos have enough defensive disruption to make this interesting early, but the betting market is clearly pricing in a major gap in roster strength, physicality, and depth.

Kickoff is set for tonight at 7:30pm ET Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor. The game will be broadcast nationally on NBC.

Let’s dive into my Western Michigan vs Michigan prediction, odds and best bets.

Western Michigan vs Michigan Prediction

  • Prediction: Michigan 38, Western Michigan 14

Michigan averaged 27.5 points and 396.9 total yards per game last season, showing enough balance to attack opponents on the ground and through the air. Against a MAC opponent at home, the Wolverines should be able to establish a physical identity immediately.

Western Michigan is not without strengths. The Broncos generated 43 sacks last season and finished with a +9 turnover differential, which speaks to an aggressive defense capable of flipping field position. That pressure profile matters against a big favorite because one short field or defensive takeaway can dramatically impact a 28-point spread.

The concern for Western Michigan is sustainability. Michigan’s offense was efficient in scoring territory, converting 78.8% of its red-zone trips last season, and the Wolverines finished with a neutral turnover differential. If Michigan avoids the self-inflicted mistakes that underdogs need, the Broncos may struggle to generate enough offense to keep pace.

I expect Michigan to lean on its offensive line, wear down Western Michigan’s front seven, and gradually stretch the margin in the second half. The Wolverines are the deserved heavy favorite, but laying 28 points requires sustained urgency and late-game execution.

Michigan’s -6667 moneyline price at DraftKings implies an overwhelming likelihood that the Wolverines win outright, while Western Michigan’s +2000 number reflects the longshot nature of a road upset in Ann Arbor.

The more interesting market is the spread. Michigan -27.5 at -113 at BetMGM offers a slightly cheaper price than Western Michigan +28.5 at -124. Bettors backing Western Michigan are paying extra juice to grab the key number, while Michigan backers are being offered a modest discount to lay it.

The total of 49.5 (-105 odds for the Over, -110 odds for the Under at bet365) is also important because it aligns closely with a Michigan blowout script. A 38-14 result clears the Over by 2.5 points, but there is not much margin for error if Western Michigan struggles to finish drives or Michigan takes the air out of the ball late.

When a number is this lopsided, it is worth cross-checking the game on prediction market apps to see whether contract pricing agrees with the sportsbook read.

Western Michigan vs Michigan Best Bets

Michigan -28 (-105 at bet365): I understand why the market is attracted to Western Michigan +28, but my preferred side is Michigan -28 at the cheaper -105 price. The Wolverines have the offensive balance and line-of-scrimmage advantage to control this matchup for four quarters. If they avoid turnovers, Western Michigan will have a difficult time generating enough explosive offense to stay within four touchdowns. The key is Michigan’s ability to finish drives. With a 78.8% red-zone efficiency mark last season, the Wolverines are built to turn long possessions into touchdowns rather than field goals. That matters when laying a big number.

Over 49.5 (-110 at bet365): My projected score of 38-14 lands on 52 total points, giving a slight lean to the Over. The risk is that Michigan builds a lead and slows the tempo in the second half, but the Wolverines may still do enough scoring on their own to push this total upward. Western Michigan does not need to be explosive for the Over to cash. Two scoring drives from the Broncos could be enough if Michigan approaches the high 30s or low 40s.

Jordan Marshall Over 100.5 Rushing Yards (-114 at FanDuel): If available, Jordan Marshall Over 100.5 rushing yards remains a strong game-script fit. Michigan should have every incentive to establish the run, protect a lead, and wear down Western Michigan’s defensive front. In a matchup where the Wolverines are favored by 28, Marshall’s workload could be heavy enough to clear the century mark.
