  • The Valero Texas Open from San Antonio, TX tees off Thursday, March 31st
  • Rory McIlroy is the +800 favorite over Jordan Spieth to claim victory
  • We’ve narrowed down the golfers with the best chance of emerging victorious and provided the best value bets below

Following Scottie Scheffler’s third win in five tournaments at the WGC-Dell Match Play to ascend to #1 in the world rankings, the PGA Tour heads down the road to San Antonio for the Valero Texas Open. The newly minted top golfer is not in the field, which includes Rory McIlroy and defending champion Jordan Spieth.

This provides the final tune-up for the best players to hone their game in anticipation for the year’s first major next week at the Masters. Most of the top players have declined to participate at TPC San Antonio, but recently injured major champions in Bryson DeChambeau and Hideki Matsuyama are competing.

Going low is mandatory for success at this venue, with seven of the last eight champions shooting double digits under par en route to victory.

Odds as of March 29th at Caesars Sportsbook

After odds opened Monday, we’ve seen the bettors hit the prices of Hideki Matsuyama and Abraham Ancer, shortening their odds. Guys who have been faded by Tuesday are Bryson DeChambeau, Tony Finau and Rickie Fowler – who’s odds have faded from open.

This is the final event before the first major of the year at Augusta National, as players at the top of the Masters odds will be looking to fully dial in their game.

Corey Conners Poised for Second Win

In 2019, Canadian Corey Conners had to Monday qualify for this championship, then rode that momentum all the way to his first PGA Tour title. That week, he gained a whopping 14 shots tee-to-green over his competitors. He then followed that up with a respectable T-14th in his title defense in 2021.

Subsequently, his ‘strokes gained’ numbers at this course have been stellar.

Ball Striking Approach Total Tee-To-Green Off-The-Tee Putting

Conners enters the tournament with a high level of confidence, as he made it to the semi-finals of the WGC-Dell Match Play, before settling for a third place result. In all, he won six of seven matches, having taken the consolation match over Dustin Johnson.

At times horses for courses is a good motto to live by, just like two weeks ago, when Sam Burns defended his title at the Valspar Championship. Conners (+1800), with his third ranked greens in regulation percentage and 13th overall tee-to-green game this season are a match made in heaven at this track.

2022 Valero Texas Open Best Value Picks

  1. Chris Kirk (+4000): Chris Kirk has been on the first page of the leaderboard a few times in the last month, resulting in a T-5th at Bay Hill and T-7th at the Honda Classic. In the last twelve rounds, he’s tops in total strokes gained, of those competing, and third tee-to-green. He’s also found success at this venue, recording a T-6th last year and a T-8th in both 2015 and 2018.
  2. Davis Riley (+6000): Davis Riley comes into the week riding the high of confidence from his last start at the Valspar Championship. Though he wasn’t able to get over the finish line, he was in a playoff with Sam Burns, where he gained nearly seven shots tee-to-green over his contemporaries. In the last twelve rounds, he ranks tenth in total strokes gained.
  3. Charley Hoffman (+9000): A deep-dive long shot with upside, particularly in the top 5/10/20 markets is Charley Hoffman. He enters the week in no form, but he’s the all-time money winner at this tournament, never missing a cut in 15 attempts. He’s won this event in the past (2016), and has been runner-up three times at this course, including the last two iterations in 2019 and 2021. First in total strokes gained and SG: tee-to-green in last 24 rounds at TPC San Antonio.
