36 holes are in the books at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, and so far one of the weakest fields on the PGA Tour this season is making the Detroit Golf Club look like a municipal course.

Nate Lashley carries a one stroke lead into Round 3 after not getting into the field until Wednesday thanks to David Berganio’s withdrawal. Cameron Champ is the betting favorite despite being a stroke behind, while 4 of the top 7 pre-tournament favorites didn’t make the cut, including world number two Dustin Johnson.

Top of the Board

Of the three top favorites after 36 holes, the only one I would consider betting is Charles Howell III at +500. The 40-year-old ranks 6th in ball striking and 4th in strokes gained tee to green through two rounds, and is one of the most consistent money makers on Tour over the last two decades.

Lashley is a great story, but he has one career top-10 finish, and that came at an alternate field event. He’s doing all of his damage on and around the green, and it’s just not realistic for him to gain another 5.3 strokes putting over the next two days. Champ meanwhile, is playing the weekend for just the third time in his last nine events and has also been bailed out by a scorching hot putter.

His ball striking has been mediocre this week and after failing to gain strokes putting in seven of his previous eight tournaments, it seems like a big ask for him to continue to be lights out with the flat stick for another two rounds.

Favorite Live Value Picks at the Rocket Mortgage Classic

  1. Hideki Matsuyama (+1400): He’s one of the best ball strikers on the planet and has been trending towards a victory for the last three months. He ranks second in the field in strokes gained tee to green over his last 50 rounds and first in approach.
  2. Byeong Hun An (+1800): Another player trending in the right direction with two top-17 finishes in elite fields this month. He’s gained strokes in every key metric this week including putting, which is rare for him, and ranks fourth in strokes gained tee to green in this field over his last 50 rounds.
  3. J.T. Poston (+2000): He leads the field in strokes gained approach this week and in birdies with 15. He’s a bit of a streaky player, but when he’s on he can score with anyone as evident by his 10 birdie round on Friday.
