It’s been a reversal of fortunes for the Giants (51-41, 25-19 away) and Pirates (41-51, 22-23 home) since the first month of the season. Read on for an analysis of Giants vs Pirates.

While Pittsburgh raced out to a 20-9 start, San Fran sat at 11-17 through the first month of action. Since then the Giants are a terrific 40-24, while the Bucs have struggled, putting together a 21-42 mark.

On Sunday, July 16th, the Giants look to brush away the Pirates with a road sweep when these teams hook up for an early matinee affair with the first pitch scheduled for 12:05 pm ET from beautiful PNC Park. This game can be seen on Peacock. Check out the Giants vs Pirates odds below, as well as our best bet and picks for this matchup.

Giants vs Pirates Odds

Team Moneyline Runline Total
San Francisco Giants -180 -1.5 (-115) O 8.5 (-110)
Pittsburgh Pirates +155 +1.5 (-105) U 8.5 (-110)

Having shown an inability to get victories over the past couple of weeks, the Pirates are once again underdogs with another L expected when they close things out with the Giants on Sunday. In fact, the Giants are even -115 favorites to win by two or more on the run line.

There’s a small chance we could see some rain for this one, but it’s unlikely. Forecasts are calling for a mix of sun and clouds in Pittsburgh with temperatures hovering around 80 degrees during the game.

San Francisco vs Pittsburgh Probable Pitchers

Inconsistency has plagued Giants veteran Alex Wood of late. He’s alternated between shutting out opponents and giving up at least four earned runs in his last six outings.

Last time on the mound, he pitched five scoreless against the Rockies, so if recent trends continue, he’s due to be rocked by a Pirates side that has really struggled to get runs across the plate this month.

Wood vs Bido Stats

Alex Wood
VS
Osvaldo Bido
4-3 Record 1-1
4.68 ERA 4.44
1.48 WHIP 1.44
.255 OBA .258
2.0 SO/W Ratio 2.2

Not having to deal with high expectations has granted Osvaldo Bido a smooth beginning to his big-league career. The 27-year-old rookie has made six appearances for the Bucs and delivered mostly solid performances.

He has shown a good combination of using his four-seam fastball and slider, keeping opponents off-balance. Control has proven to be a bit of a problem, as he’s walked 10 and hit four batters in under 25 innings of work.

Sunday will be his first outing in a week. In his last appearance, Bido actually worked out of the bullpen, getting four outs against the Diamondbacks in a 4-2 Pittsburgh victory, the Bucs’ lone win in their last seven games.

Pirates’ Offense Running Dry

Hoping to come back rejuvenated after the all-star break, the Pirates’ offense is still struggling. There aren’t many MLB starting lineups that have been much worse in July.

Pirates Recent Results

Date Away Team Home Team Result
July 15th Giants Pirates SF, 3-1
July 14th Giants Pirates SF, 6-4
July 9th Pirates Diamondbacks PIT, 4-2
July 8th Pirates Diamondbacks ARI, 3-2
July 7th Pirates Diamondbacks ARI, 7-3
July 6th Pirates Dodgers LAD, 5-2
July 5th Pirates Dodgers LAD, 6-4

Holding a 2-9 record this month, the Bucs have scored more than four runs just twice in 11 games in July. In their last six games, Pittsburgh has pushed an average of just 2.7 runs per game across the plate. That’s not going to lead to many victories in this league. They’ve gone under the betting line in three of their last four.

San Francisco vs Pittsburgh Predictions

Firmly back in the race to win the National League West, the Giants’ division odds have shortened from +2400 to +600 in the span of a couple of months. If you were a believer in the Bay Area squad back in May and put down some cash, you could be looking at some big money.

On the other hand, the Pirates have folded big time since their hot start. They have yet to win a single game straight up in the MLB odds at home this month. Stick with the trend and bet the Giants to continue their winning ways with a sweep of the downtrodden Pirates.

Pick: San Francisco Giants Moneyline  (-180)
