On Wednesday, August 2nd, the Tigers (47-60, 25-30 away) and Pirates (48-58, 26-27 home) hook up for an early afternoon affair on getaway day with first pitch scheduled for 12:35pm ET from PNC Park.
Viewers can see this game on Bally Sports Detroit as well as AT&T SportsNet Pittsburgh.
With the trade deadline having come and gone, expect some youngsters on both teams to get more chances to make an impression with a look towards next season. Both teams playoff chances are all but over at this point, although the Tigers are still relevant in the division odds in the weak American League Central.
Before getting ahead of themselves, they look to avoid a two game sweep at the hands of the Bucs. Check out the Tigers vs Pirates odds for Wednesday’s matchup below, while we also offer you our best bet and predictions.
Tigers vs Pirates Odds
Team | Moneyline | Runline | Total |
---|---|---|---|
Detroit Tigers | -125 | -1.5 (+145) | O 8.5 (+100) |
Pittsburgh Pirates | +105 | +1.5 (-165) | U 8.5 (-120) |
After their offense was limited to just one run on six hits in the series opener, the Tigers are -125 moneyline chalk to strike back and earn a split in this Interleague battle. The over/under is set at 8.5 runs, a total these teams have failed to exceed in seven of their last eight meetings.
Sunny skies are what the forecast is calling for in Pittsburgh with temperatures hovering around 80 degrees during game time in what should be a beautiful day for baseball.

Tigers vs Pirates Probable Pitchers
It’s not often you see a player reject a deal that would send him to a top contender in the World Series odds, but that’s just what Eduardo Rodriguez did, vetoing a proposed trade to the Dodgers.
The Los Angeles Dodgers and Detroit Tigers had a trade in place for left-handed starter Eduardo Rodriguez, but Rodriguez invoked his 10-team no-trade clause that included the Dodgers and the deal is now dead, sources tell ESPN.

In the midst of one of the best seasons of his career, the lefty cited a desire to remain close to his family on the east coast.
Rodriguez is sporting a 2.95 ERA, but has been less sharp from returning from a finger injury he suffered in May. That issue cost him multiple weeks and in four starts since returning, he’s got an ugly 5.66 ERA.
Rodriguez vs Bido Stats
6-5 | Record | 2-1 |
2.95 | ERA | 4.50 |
1.03 | WHIP | 1.53 |
.216 | OBA | .273 |
4.3 | SO/W Ratio | 2.2 |
As expected, the Pirates were sellers at the deadline, strengthen the MLB lineups of other squads while hurting their own roster for the current season. Veteran pitcher Rich Hill and first baseman Ji Man Choi were both dealt to the Padres.
With Hill gone, rookie Osvaldo Bido will likely stick with the big club for the remainder of the season. At 27-years old, he’ll try and use these last couple of months to prove he belongs.
Bido’s last appearance came out of the bullpen 11 days ago, when he shut out the Angels in three innings of relief to earn the victory. He hasn’t given up a single run in two relief outings, while posting a 5.26 ERA in six starts this year, including allowing nine earned runs in his last 10 innings of work as a starter.
Tigers vs Pirates Picks
It’s been over a month since the Pirates swept a series. Granted, they only have to take two from the Tigers to get the brooms out, but Detroit has a decided pitching advantage on the bunk.

Bido has not demonstrated the poise to mow down a team as a starter, while Rodriguez’ teammates should be motivated to win one for their hurler who opted to stay in Motown rather than go off to California for a chance to win a World Series.
Although they’ve been struggling on the moneyline in the MLB odds, our prediction is that the Tigers leave Pittsburgh with a win. The under is also a good bet for two of the bottom five offenses in the league, but we like a straight up victory for the Tigers a little more.
Pick: Detroit Tigers Moneyline (-125)
