For the first seven games of the season, the Boston Celtics looked nothing like the best team in the NBA. The last seven games however, have been a different story.

The Celtics (11-3, 5-2 road) have strung together seven straight wins and will look to make it eight in a row on Wednesday when they visit the Hawks (9-5, 5-2 home). Online sportsbooks like their chances in the NBA odds, as they pegged Boston as a short road favorite.

Boston Celtics Betting Analysis

Prior to Monday night versus Oklahoma City, Boston had cruised to victories in three straight. They got all they could handle from the Thunder though, as the Celtics needed to overcome a 15 point second half deficit to get the job done.

Boston’s starting five was sluggish for the opening half, but reserves Derrick White and Payton Prichard gave them the jolt they needed in the third quarter. The two combined to score 26 points off the bench, including many in a key second half stretch that helped swing the game.

Jayson Tatum, a top-four NBA MVP odds contender, poured in 27 points and grabbed 10 boards, while Marcus Smart shook off a horrendous opening 24 minutes, by scoring 20 second half points.

The Celtics have averaged over 125 points per night during their past four games, and lead the NBA in offensive rating. For the season they average 119.5 points per contest, two more than anyone else, while shooting 48% from the field and 39% from three.

Tatum and Jalen Brown do most of the damage offensively, as the duo are only two of eight players in the entire NBA who average 25+ points and 6+ rebounds per outing.

Boston Celtics Injury Report

Player Injury Status
Malcolm Brogdon Hamstring Questionable
Robert Williams III Knee Out

Defensively, they’re a far cry from their top rated unit from last season, but they’re still respectable in their own end. They’re yielding the 10th lowest effective field goal percentage, while surrendering the seventh fewest points in the paint and third fewest assists.

They’ll be tested in their end repeatedly on Wednesday, as Atlanta possesses a formidable, high scoring offense.

On the injury front, backup guard Malcolm Brogdon is questionable with a hamstring injury, while Robert Williams III will miss another game as he works his way back from knee surgery.

Atlanta Hawks Betting Analysis

The Hawks rank top-10 in most key offensive categories including scoring, assist-to-turnover ratio, made field goals, points in the paint and fast break points.

They’re fresh off a win over the Bucks, who boast the second shortest NBA Championship odds, and will now look to knock the Celtics, who are the current title favorites.

In addition to boasting a top-10 scoring offense, Atlanta ranks eighth in defensive rating. They’ve held four of their last seven opponents to 106 points or less, including Milwaukee twice in the past seven days.

De’Andre Hunter and Trae Young led the way versus the Bucks with 24 and 21 points respectively, while Young also dished out nine assists. Dejounte Murray added 19 points, and he and Young are quickly becoming one of the most formidable backcourts in the league. They’re the only two teammates who average 21+ points and 7+ assists per game, and they’ve led the Hawks to five wins in their past seven games.

Injury wise, the team will enter play at full strength minus the services of Bogdan Bogdanovic. The sharpshooter hasn’t played all season due to a knee injury.

Celtics vs Hawks Prediction

The potent offenses of both these teams have led to plenty of high scoring games. We should expect offensive fireworks in this matchup not only due to each team’s talent, but also the speed at which Atlanta plays at.

The Hawks run and gun style force teams to play fast to keep up. Atlanta ranks fourth in pace in the entire league, while only four teams have seen a higher percentage of their games eclipse the total.

Team Possessions Per Game – Top 5

Rank Team Possessions/Game
1 Oklahoma City Thunder 107.3
2 Golden State Warriors 107.0
3 New York Knicks 106.4
T4 Atlanta Hawks 106.2
T4 San Antonio Spurs 106.2

Boston just happens to be one of those squads as the Celtics are a league-high 8-4-1 to the over. Six of their past eight games have cleared the total, and this one versus a Hawks squad with more than enough firepower to punch back should as well.

Pick: Over 232.5 (-110)
