A Mean Green Dribbling Machine

Last season, North Texas won the C-USA tourney as the #3 seed in the West. The Mean Green knocked off both #1 seeds – Louisiana Tech (West) and Western Kentucky (East). They went on to upset Purdue in the opening round of March Madness, despite being a #13 seed in the NCAA Tournament odds.

This time around, the Mean Green are the team to beat. North Texas enters as the top seed from the West. The Mean Green own a C-USA-best conference record of 16-2.

Balance is the name of the game for North Texas. The Mean Green list five players scoring on average in double digits this season. They’re paced by junior guard Tylor Perry. The C-USA Sixth Player of the Year, Perry is averaging 13.7 points per game. The 2021 NJCAA D1 National Tournament MVP, Perry has 21 double-digit scoring efforts in his first season with the Mean Green. Perry also shoots 43% from beyond the arc.

SBD’s March Madness Bracket is projecting North Texas to be the #9 seed in the Midwest. No C-USA school is given a betting line in the Final Four odds. The Mean Green are the #1 defensive team in C-USA, allowing  just 55.61 points per game.

UAB Worth A Look

The Blazers are one of the two schools to win a C-USA game from North Texas this season. They beat the Mean Green 69-63 on Jan. 6.

UAB (24-7) is led by junior guard Jordan Walker, the C-USA Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year. Walker led the league in scoring averaging 21.6 points. He also led in assists with 5.33 per night during C-USA action. His 3.37 made 3-point field goals per game are also #1 in the conference.

The Blazers are the #1 scoring offense in C-USA (79.7 ppg) and the #2 scoring defense (65.06 ppg). Their scoring margin of +14.90 also tops the conference, as does their 9.81 steals and 5.19 turnover margin per game. Senior guard Quan Jackson leads C-USA in steals per game (2.42).

Bulldogs Could Show Prowess

The West is the best of C-USA this season. Louisiana Tech finished third in that side of the conference. All six of the Bulldogs’ losses came against schools with above-.500 conference records. They’re one of just four C-USA schools with a winning road record this season.

The Bulldogs lead C-USA in assist/turnover ratio (1.31). Freshman forward Kenneth Lofton Jr is averaging a double-double this season with 16.38 ppg and 10.52 rebounds per game. The latter total is leading the conference. He’s the only player in the conference to rank in the top five in both categories. Lofton is leading C-USA in offensive (3.31) and defensive (7.21) rebounds.

C-USA Tournament Belongs To Mean Green

UAB is carrying a conference-best four-game winning streak into the C-USA Tournament. However, North Texas is 15-1 over the past 16 games.

The Mean Green are ranked 19th in adjusted defensive efficiency (92.3) by KanPom. They’re seventh in the nation in 3-point field goal defense (28.0%).

Pick: North Texas (+170)
