After their impressive first round win, the Red Raiders are an 8-point favorites over the Fighting Irish. At +260, Notre Dame have an implied win probability of 27.78%. In the first round against Alabama, that implied win probability was 40%, so don’t sleep on the Fighting Irish. The total for this contest is 133 points.

Notre Dame Providing Betting Value as Underdog

Many didn’t even expect the Fighting Irish to get to this point of the tournament, but they’ve provided incredible betting value as an underdog of late, winning five of their last seven games outright when they weren’t the favorite, including both the First Four and first round games of this tournament.

The question is, do they have what it takes to actually make a deep run and be a potential March Madness bracket buster? Alabama would likely say yes after the Irish burned them in the first round, shooting 53.7% from the field, en route to a 78-64 win.

Notre Dame were led in that one by guard Cormac Ryan who shot 10-13 from the field including a ridiculous 7-9 from beyond the arc for 29 points. The redshirt junior averaged just 9.2 ppg this season, but has been gaining confidence of late, scoring 15 points or more in four consecutive games.

Shooting and offensive output are the trademarks of this Mike Brey squad. They have the 10th best three point percentage in the nation this season, nailing treys at a 38.4% clip and according to the KenPom rankings, they have the 24th best effective field goal percentage in the nation. Not bad for an 11 seed.

Texas Tech Betting Outlook

The Red Raiders scored more than any other team in the first round of the tournament with 97 points, pretty surprising when you consider this Texas Tech squad is most known for their prowess on the defensive side of the ball.

According to KenPom, they were the top team in the nation in adjusted defensive efficiency. When you combine that with a suddenly red-hot offense, it makes sense that they’re currently listed seventh in the Final Four odds at +450 as they are definitely a team that should be feared.

They also play their regular season ball in a conference that’s proven to be amongst the best in the country if you consider all Big 12 teams went undefeated in the first round of the tournament for a perfect 6-0 record.

Every member of their starting five scored in double digits against Montana State in the first round and the defense also did what they do best, forcing 16 turnovers and holding the Bobcats to 38.2% shooting from the field and 62 points in total.

Notre Dame vs Texas Tech Pick

Studying advanced statistics and analytics should play a part in your March Madness betting strategy  and when you take those numbers into account, Texas Tech has to be considered amongst the best teams still alive. On top of that stellar defense, they have the sixth best overall efficiency rating according to KenPom, while Notre Dame sits 40th on that list.

Notre Dame’s players may also have some tired legs coming into this one. They play a strict seven man rotation and needed double overtime in the First Four on Wednesday to get to the first round where they defeated Alabama on Friday.

The Fighting Irish were 10-5 against the spread as an underdog this year for a cover percentage of 66.7% in those situations, while the Red Raiders were 16-11 ATS as a betting favorite.

The most intriguing bet in this matchup might be the total which sits at 133. While the Red Raiders have a smothering defense, Notre Dame has scored at least 70 points in 10 straight games and the over is 8-1-1 in the Fighting Irish last 10 overall.

This definitely feels like a Texas Tech win, but the Irish can shoot the lights out, and the Red Raiders definitely are capable of that too as they proved in the first round, so take the over in this game.

Pick: Over 133 (-110)
