  • Its the latest installment of the Battle of Pennsylvania as the Philadelphia Flyers (24-30-11) visit the Pittsburgh Penguins (32-22-10)

While the rivalry is typically better when the stakes are higher, there aren’t many better matchups in the NHL than the Flyers and Penguins.

Philly is firmly out of the Eastern Conference playoff picture. And it was a bit of a disappointing Trade Deadline as they weren’t able to move as many pieces as they would have liked. So now they get to play spoiler.

For the Penguins, they just need to stay a step ahead of the teams behind them in the standings. Salvaging a point after blowing a 3-1 lead against the Islanders on Thursday is a start. The Pens also have a pair of games in hand over the Panthers and a somewhat comfortable four-point cushion over the Senators and Sabres.

Pittsburgh gets a chance to inch closer to a playoff spot on Saturday afternoon at PPG Paints Arena.

Flyers vs Penguins Odds

Game Time (ET) Team Puck Line Total Moneyline
Saturday, March 11 Philadelphia Flyers +1.5 (-105) Ov 6.5 (-105) +225
3:30 PM Pittsburgh Penguins -1.5 (-125) Un 6.5 (-125) -280

Despite the setback, the Penguins are riding high with wins in five of their last seven games. So, not surprisingly, Pittsburgh are home favorites on Saturday. The Pens have beaten the struggling Lightning (twice), Blues, Predators and Blue Jackets.

Pittsburgh are -290 to make the playoffs when it comes to the NHL Playoff Odds. They’ve positioned themselves well, they just need to keep it going. Only the true diehards or the boldest of the bold would think about taking the Flyers at +9000.

Flyers, Penguins Renew Metropolitan Rivalry

Under the old Division format, these two would have already squared off a handful of times.

But to this point in the 2022/23 season they’ve crossed paths just once.

Back on November 25th, Pittsburgh pulled off a 4-1 victory. That victory capped off a five-game winning streak. Josh Archibald opened the scoring, Sidney Crosby added his 11th of the season, and two of Ryan Poehling’s five goals on the season rounded out the scoring.

Teddy Blueger had three assists in that game but he’s now a Vegas Golden Knight.

Philadelphia Sliding Over Last Seven Games

Things have not gone according to plan in John Tortorella’s first season as Flyers head coach.

He’s had an ongoing feud with one-time leading scorer Kevin Hayes, and he’s led them to four losing streaks of four games or more. One of those was a nasty 10 game slide.

Now Philly has just one win in their last seven.

Flyers Last Seven Games

Opponent Final Score Flyers  Moneyline Over/Under
March 9 @ CAR 1-0 CAR +300 6.5 (Under)
March 7 @ TBL 5-2 TBL +250 6.5 (Over)
March 5 vs DET 3-1 PHI -132 6 (Under)
March 1 vs NYR 3-2 (OT) NYR +165 6.5 (Under)
Feb 25 @ NJD 7-0 NJD +250 6 (Over)
Feb 24 vs MTL 5-2 MTL +140 6.5 (Over)
Feb 21 @ EDM 4-2 EDM +284 6.5 (Under)

If you’re looking for a bright side, the Flyers were able to cash in the one game they were favored. Otherwise it’s been a lot of long odds and not a lot of payouts.

In terms of road games, Philly has lost five of their last six road games. They recently completed their Western swing, dropping games to Seattle, Vancouver and Edmonton.

Philly could definitely use Travis Konecny, but the seven-year pro has been shelved since February 20th. Now the Flyers are hoping that Owen Tippett can finish his breakout season (18 goals in 59 games) on a high note.

Flyers vs Penguins Pick

Pittsburgh’s offense has been clicking lately. They’ve scored at least three goals in five of their last six games and 24 goals total in that stretch. Of course seven of those came in one game.

Regardless, the Pens’ offense is the one to back.

Flyers vs Penguins Same Game Parlay

Pick Odds
Over 6.5 goals scored -105
Owen Tippett to score anytime +260
PARLAY ODDS +400

The end result will probably be pretty lopsided for the Pens on Saturday, but the Flyers won’t be getting shut out. Both teams are in the bottom half of the league when it comes to goals against.

Depending on your book of choice, you can choose from seven different Penguins before getting to your first Flyer to score.

That would be Tippett.

If there’s a Penguin you want to back, Evgeni Malkin at +155 gives you parlay odds of +270. But your single bet of the afternoon is the over.

The Pick: Over 6.5 goals (-105); 1 unit
