While the New York Rangers (3-3-2) haven’t enjoyed the start they were hoping for, they can take solace in the fact it’s still early.

Last year’s Eastern Conference finalist have lost four in a row, and five of their last six. Despite that, they’re still just two points out of top spot in the Metropolitan Division.

For the Dallas Stars (5-2-1), they’re playing their second game back home since a four-game road trip through the Atlantic Division. They had lost three of four, before a much-needed win on Thursday against the Washington Capitals.

Puck drop is set for 2:00 pm ET from American Airlines Centre on Bally Sports Southwest, MSG and NHL Network.

After getting back on track with a win over the Capitals, Dallas opens as  -125 favorites. Rightfully so, as the Rangers were favorites against the Sharks,  Avalanche and Blue Jackets on home ice,  and lost all three.

The total is pegged at 6.0, which isn’t surprising considering Jake Oettinger is starting for Dallas, and Igor Shesterkin is expected to draw in for the Rangers. New York’s last five games have averaged 5.8 total goals, but that’s pushed up by a 6-4 win over the Ducks. Dallas saw totals of seven and six before a 3-1 loss to the Bruins and their 2-0 win on Thursday.

New York Rangers Betting Outlook

When it comes to the NHL odds, the Rangers have not done bettors many favors lately.

The four game slide is bad enough. And while dropping one on home ice to the Stanley Cup champs is forgivable, their other results aren’t.

New York Rangers: Last Five Games

Opponent Final Score Moneyline Over/Under
@ NYI 3-0 NYI +130 6.0 (Under)
vs COL 3-2 COL (SO) -106 6.0 (Under)
vs CBJ 5-1 CBJ -247 6.5 (Under)
vs SJ 3-2 SJ (OT) -278 6.0 (Under)
vs ANA 6-4 NYR -253 6.0 (Over)

The results against the Sharks and Blue Jackets likely blew up a few tickets considering how heavily bettors were siding with the Rangers. The run on unders isn’t surprising, though. Shesterkin, who is tenth in the Hart Trophy odds, started three of those games, earning New York’s lone win, and starting both 3-2 losses.

Ultimately things may be boiling down to the lack of offense coming out of Gerard Gallant’s team. 50-goal man Chris Kreider has just two through eight games. Artemi Panarin (12 points) and Mika Zibanejad (eight points) are doing their part, but Filip Chytil, Kaapo Kakko and Alex Lafreniere need to do more.

Dallas Stars Betting Outlook

While the Rangers are lacking a balanced attack up front, the Stars have it in spades.

Five forwards have six or more points through Dallas’ first seven games. Joe Pavelski is leading the team in goals (four), and Tyler Seguin is enjoying something of a renaissance, sitting third in assists (four).

Dallas Stars: Last Five Games

Opponent Final Score Moneyline Over/Under
vs WSH 2-0 DAL -125 5.5 (Under)
@ BOS 3-1 BOS +161 5.5 (Under)
@ OTT 4-2 OTT -105 6.5 (Under)
@ MTL 5-2 DAL -169 6.0 (Over)
@ TOR 3-2 TOR (OT) +159 6.5 (Under)

Despite the balanced scoring, unders have been popular with the Stars as well. Jake Oettinger has been nearly unbeatable in net so far, going 4-1 in five games with a 1.41 GAA and a .953 save percentage.

Rangers vs Stars Pick

This one  promises to be a tight-checking affair with not a lot going on. So it can make building a parlay tricky.

But there are some picks you can mix in that take all of that into account.

Rangers vs Stars Same-Game Parlay

Pick Odds
Under 6.0 -120
Chris Kreider, any time goal scorer +155
Parlay Odds +367

Despite the fact Kreider remains a bit snake-bitten, he’s always a threat to score. Kreider is also starting to shoot more, as he’s coming off of back-to-back five shot games. So it’s only a matter of time before they start going in again.

Overall, if parlay’s aren’t your style, this seems like an easy under considering the way these two are playing to open the season.

The Pick: UNDER 6.0 (-110); 1 unit
