The UEFA Nations League is officially back in action and Matchday 1 brings a tantalizing fixture between Belgium and Netherlands on Friday in Brussels. The kick-off is scheduled for 2:45 PM ET. Both sides sit beside Poland and Wales in this pot.

The Belgians are coming off a disappointing Euro 2020 where they bowed out in the quarterfinals to eventual winners, Italy. The Dutch meanwhile were also poor last summer, losing in the Round of 16 to the Czech Republic. However, both nations are in the World Cup in Qatar after impressive qualifying campaigns.

The last two meetings between Belgium and Netherlands ended in 1-1 draws in international friendlies.

Over/Under & Spread

The under in goals at +102 holds serious value here given the recent history. Four of the previous five encounters between these sides hit the under.

Belgium vs Netherlands Prediction

Roberto Martinez’s men were expected to be a serious contender to win Euro 2020 but failed to do so as their golden generation continues to age. Nevertheless, the Red Devils did flourish in this competition in 2020/21, finishing atop their group and making the semifinals before suffering defeat to France and Italy in the third-place match.

While their pot this time around is by no means easy, Belgium will be feeling confident. They face the Dutch, Poland, and Wales two times each over the next number of months in what should be a great tune-up for Qatar, where the Belgians are a favorite to win Group F alongside Canada, Morocco, and Croatia. Their World Cup odds sit at just +1100 as well.

Martinez has arguably the most in-form midfielder in the world in his squad, with Kevin De Bruyne coming off a breathtaking campaign for Premier League winners Manchester City. His creativity is always dangerous whether it’s for club or country.

The Netherlands will certainly be pleased to be back in the World Cup after missing out on the 2018 edition in Russia and these Nations League group stage games are a good test for them ahead of Qatar. Louis van Gaal’s group finished up their WCQ campaign on a high note, beating Norway 2-0 last November before dominating Denmark then playing to a 1-1 draw with Germany in friendlies.

As for this tournament, Holland finished behind Italy in 2020-21 in League A Group 1 with a 3-2-1 record in six matches, just missing out on the semifinals. Despite their struggles in the European Championships, the Dutch have a realistic chance of coming out of this group due to the strength of their squad. They’ve played several quality sides and fared well in recent months and although Belgium is very good, the Netherlands isn’t a pushover.

Belgium vs Netherlands Potential Line-Ups & Injuries

Belgium potential line-up: Casteels; Alderweireld, Boyata, Vertonghen; Meunier, Tielemans, Witsel, Carrasco; E Hazard, Lukaku, De Bruyne

Belgium Injuries: Courtois, Denayer

Netherlands potential line-up: Flekken; De Ligt, Van Dijk, Ake; Dumfries, Berghuis, Koopmeiners, F de Jong, Blind; Weghorst, Memphis

 Netherlands Injuries: None

Belgium vs Netherlands Pick

All of these players have just ended grueling domestic campaigns. Although Thibaut Courtois is unavailable for Belgium due to a groin strain after his masterclass in the Champions League final, the hosts are still rock-solid at the back, but so is the Netherlands with Virgil van Dijk and Matthijs de Ligt as the center-back pairing. The Belgians might have more firepower in the final third with the likes of De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku, but I expect this to be a relatively even fixture with few goals. The under looks like the best bet here.

Pick: Under 2.5 Goals (+102)
