Champions League football is back this week with Matchday 2. In Group C, Borussia Dortmund will be looking for another victory in the competition when they host Sporting Lisbon at Signal Iduna on Tuesday. The kick-off is scheduled for 3:00 PM EST.

The Germans ran out as 2-1 winners at Turkish giants Besiktas on Matchday 1 behind an impressive attacking performance, while Sporting suffered a horrendous 5-1 defeat to Ajax, with Sebastian Haller bagging four goals for the visitors.

These sides have previously met twice in the 2016/17 group stages, with BVB winning on both occasions.

BVB in Good Form Against Portuguese Opponents

Dortmund may be coming off a disappointing 1-0 loss to Borussia Monchengladbach over the weekend, but their brilliant run against Portugal-based clubs on home soil is certainly something to take note of ahead of Tuesday. The Bundesliga giants have won all six matches at Signal Iduna in UEFA competitions versus Primeira Liga teams, bagging an impressive 17 goals while conceding only twice.

Marco Rose’s side put together a very solid showing in their UCL opener in Istanbul against Besiktas, with Jude Bellingham proving to be the star of the show. The young Englishman put away a beautiful opener as he took a Thomas Meunier pass onto his chest and fired home a prolific volley to give Dortmund the lead. The 18-year-old then set up none other than Erling Haaland for a simple finish just before the halftime whistle to put BVB two goals to the good. The visitors ultimately conceded in the second half, but they were able to hold on for the three points.

Coming into this clash, Marco Rose’s side has won four of their last five competitive matches with the exception of the Gladbach defeat. But, both Haaland and Marco Reus, two of their most important attackers, were sidelined with minor injuries which certainly played a part in the poor result.

However, the Norwegian and German are trending in the right direction to be available for Tuesday’s Champions League encounter. Haaland will be looking to continue his smashing start to the campaign, already scoring 11 goals and tallying three assists in eight competitive appearances this term.

Can Sporting Turn Around Their Fortunes?

Sporting received a rude awakening to Europe’s most prized competition on Matchday 1, with Dutch giants Ajax running riot on the Portuguese outfit. Haller terrorized their backline as he bagged a quartet and surely, Sporting will be looking to forget that awful result as they aim to grab some points this week.

However, German oppositions haven’t been kind to Ruben Amorim’s men. Leões have lost 12 of their last 13 games on the road against Bundesliga sides and their away form in the Champions League has been atrocious as a whole, tasting defeat in seven of the previous eight fixtures.

But, Lisbon has been strong domestically after winning their first Portuguese title since 2002 last season. Following the Ajax loss, Sporting secured back-to-back 1-0 victories and have actually gone unbeaten in league play, sitting in third place with 17 points from seven games.

However, they’re still missing a huge piece of their attack in Pedro Goncalves, who netted 23 times last term. Sporting hasn’t scored more than one goal in their last five matches and his absence is definitely a huge reason for their lack of finishing in the final third. On a more positive note though, Amorim will have the heart of his backline available on Tuesday in Sebastian Coates, who missed out on Matchday 1 because of suspension.

Dortmund vs Sporting Prediction

There is still a small possibility that Reus and Haaland won’t be fit enough to play here, but even if they aren’t, I still expect Dortmund to secure the three points. Bellingham is really coming into his own and will be a key figure up top once again and BVB’s record against Portuguese oppositions on home soil is far too impressive to ignore. Sporting will suffer another underwhelming defeat.

Pick: Borussia Dortmund to Win by 2 Goals (+265)
